Grill restoration

I recently purchased an aluminum rear grill from a 74. It's in overall decent shape. The black anodize has worn or faded almost all the way off. I think I will just hit it with some rattle can satin black to mimic the anodize.

The strakes are all staright and true and the mesh is in good shape baring one small hole taht is only visible from the back.

My issue is when I removed the grill from the deck two of the mounting studs broke. Has anyone addressed this issue? How have you replaced the studs?

Thanks for any input.

Carefully drill and tap a hole for a bolt the same size as the old stud. Cut the end off the bolt and file it to make a new stud. Or just install a stud if you have one. I'd use red locktite.

Timmy2,

I'm a little confused by your recomendation. Do you mean to tap the frame and screw a bolt into it?

Any thoughts on how to fix this issue? If I were to disassemble where can I get rivets to put it back together?

I have replaced all studs on my grill by taking the grill apart. I cut off the rivets on the backside of the grill, took it apart, replaced the studs and glued back together the 2 parts with metal epoxy glue. Has hold for 6 years now and looks original from the outside.

Are we still on this? Gee Whiz!
1) drill out rivets
2) replace broken studs with simple short studs M6 I believe
3) buy rivet tool and assortment of rivets from Home Depot (buy aluminum rivets)
4) re-rivet back together
5) take repaired grill to annodizer to have old annodizing removed and re-annodized.
6) if you have more questions... don't ask, send it to me and I'll do the above for $200

Which of these two photos is correct for a 74 2.7 badge aluminum back ground or painted?

The second question, is the 2.7 solid aluminum or just an electroplate? I am concenrd about cleaning and maybe a light polishing taking the finishe off.

Thanks again for the help.

DR.

Driver X,

I like how you painted yours I think it looks great. I am leaning toward painting the back ground. What literature do you have? I picked up the Rustoleum yetserday. Oh Tony did call but my ringer was off. Also my wife did'nt shoot me when I put the grill in the dish washer. Whew got lucky on that one.
