Speedometer input/ issue

2 part question here,

1) what is the input to the speedometer. There is some thing up with my odometer and i want to bench test it. I have a signal generator capable of doing what ever I need. I had heard it was a square wave, can any one confirm this. If so what is the pulse width/amplitude for say 60MPH

2) the odometer issue, So my odometer was working fine when i got the car. Then one day it stopped. I though it was the gear so i pooped it open to check and the gear was fine. I spun the motor a few times added maybe 2 miles. Put it all back together still confused, and wham it worked fine. the other day it stopped again. So i opened it up, gear was still fine, spun it a bit and put it all back together. Its still not working. I think the motor is bad, has this happened to any one/ does any one have the specs on the motor.

Regards
Dave
