Question Carrera Tail Question

I bought a Carrera tail recently - all glass. The guy I bought it from told me the tail was aftermarket, but when it arrived my son pointed out that the tail had the Porsche crest and PORSCHE embossed right on the tail. Is the Carrera OEM tail all glass? Maybe I got a Porsche tail and not aftermarket.

Thanks, Craig

How about posting a picture of it?

I believe that the orignal carrera tails were fiberglass. Mine was original, and the glass was very evident when it broke in the accident.

Your post had me thinking so at 11.45pm at night I've gone out and had a look at mine (87 Carrera). Defintely fibreglass but I'll be buggered if I can find a Porsche logo anywhere. Where is the stamp on yours?

Cheers

The Porsche crest is very small - it would fit under a dime. And the "PORSCHE" text is embossed right under that. I can't remember exactly where on the tail, but when I get home tonight, I'll take a picture and post it.

Thanks, Craig

I believe on my car (87 w/factory spoilers) the crest and logo are located in the center of the trailing edge of the tail, where the fiberglass meets the jumbo rubber lip that goes around the back of the tail.

NOT my car by the way. Someday i'll get that Ruf-style stuff. Someday.

KTL, you were right about that location. The crest and text are right where the tail starts to sweep up in the back. But I don't have a rubber lip on this tail. From what I've read, Carrera tails are all fiberglass. Attached are pics. I think this is an OEM tail. I'm kind of embarrassed about how little I payed for it.

$200 ! I wish I could find a deal like that. We're wanting to add a tail next year.

Great find...

I have an 87 Carrera with a factory tail. The crest and Porsche text look identical to your photo. Looks like you got a great deal. $200 including shipping, would even be a great deal for an aftermarket tail from what I have seen. Good Job!

It's funny, but I would still think the tail was aftermarket if my son hadn't pointed out the Porsche markers. My '80 911SC has 267,000 miles on it and I'm giving the car the treatment - front spoiler, rebuilt engine, new interior and now a tail. The Carrera tail isn't correct I know, but I like the look and I'm going to put a bigger AC condenser in there. Thanks everyone for the verification.

Hey, if you have that tail and it's not on yet, could you weight the glass part? Just a simple weigh yourself holding/not holding the glass part on a standard scale would be much appreciated!

rare?

I wonder if it might be a factory piece from a Carrera Lightweight, or another such semi-rare factory car. Maybe one of the guru's will chime in (Roland?)

Kurt, that tail weighs 12 lbs +/- 0.5 lbs. Checked it by stepping on and off the scale a couple of times.
