Shifter on 911SC getting stuck

I was cruising my 911SC on New Year's Day on a parkway in 5th. I stopped at a light by putting in clutch, once at a stop, I attempted to shift into neutral and shifter was stuck (clutch still in). I used a little persuasion and put into the first gear position-only it went in reverse! Couldn't get it into neutral at all. I finally finessed it and got all gears back. Any ideas????

coupler bushings are shot
shift cup on bottom of ball shot
shift tube support shot

You are in luck, I have couplers IN STOCK ;)

watch for me the revive an old thread in about a minute

re-read that...coming from 5th...coupler adjustment (which could be stemming from worn parts)

sorry...wanted to be clear....and since you said coming out of fifth iit means your lock out is getting stuck most likely caused from being out of adjustment...the lock out pin CAN wear but often times its nothing more than adjustment

here is a pic of the lock out - its the round part with the little triangle - that is the 5-R plane

when the coupler or the ball cup is worn or out of adjustment you need to move the lever farther to disengage it...but it runs out of travel when it hits the triangle and is still engaged (in gear)

Thanks. I will attack later in the month and get needed parts (from you!)

the Cup is available thru the host but requires console removal to install,..there is a very recent thread regarding that process....search down a few posts..maybe one page.

as for the coupler its easy to check, lift the rear carpet and unscrew 4 sheet metal screws to remove the access cover...then look at it, if it's really bad you might see right away.

The Bentley explains "adjustment" very well...its a little tricky the first couple times but not too hard....you might start there and see what it gains you

Though you can adjust the coupler yourself, I found my lady holding the shifter in place while I hold the coupler in place and tighten made things go allot faster.

ivangene 01-03-2012 08:48 PM

PICS or it never happened !

:p

DRACO A5OG 01-03-2012 08:51 PM

He he he, she actually helps me allot i.e. clutch adjustment, heater lever, brake light test, holding the steering wheel as I do my alignment/toe adjustments

ivangene 01-03-2012 09:01 PM

my dog helps me

well...actually he licks my face when I get down low..and when i am laying flat he stands over me and tries to be the Alpha Male

hahaha

I need to get my wife in the garage more

yes yo can adjust the coupler yourself .. just lay in the car and hold the shifter with the back of your left knee and then you can use your hand to hold the coupler in place and the other for the screwdiver .. although I find it easier with another person ..

Or, if your body is not as flexible as Steve's, and mine isn't, try bungee cords.

Thanks all, My dog also licks me when i am on the ground working! Of course, he has short legs and it is quite exciting when we are the same height.

Not to hijack, but I just picked up a 81SC recently and the shifter also sometimes locks into 5th gear, but the symptoms are (I think) not the same as the OP's.

Sometimes it locks into 5th and won't budge a millimeter in any direction. If I give it a little "bunt" with the palm of my hand it then comes loose.

I did a visual of the coupler and ball cup (at least, as much as I could see it) and they seem to be still in place and not falling apart. Couldn't see the bushing that's just to the rear of the ball cup at all.

Do you think it's just an adjustment needed? Or a full replacement of the cup/bushing/coupler and then adjust?

Maybe I just answered my own question...

DRACO A5OG 01-06-2012 12:05 AM

You in L.A.? Well let me tell yeah, prior to swapping the coupler, I thought my $hit was tight but the difference was day and night.

PM me and you can feel my shifter and decide for yourself :D

ivangene 01-06-2012 05:14 AM

so many couplers, so big of smiles

:p

acorad, as stated: I think you have a "travel issue" where your coupler and or related parts are worn to the point that you need to move the shift arm farther in order to engage and disengage the gears...so the shifter housing runs out of room and that is most prevalent in the 5-R plane where the lockout mechanism is preventing the extra travel needed - sounds like at the very minimum a coupler adjustment fore and aft...and maybe a call from "The Coupler Whisperer"

acorad 01-06-2012 09:32 AM

Thanks guys. I think I'll just order up the cup, bushing and coupler and replace them all.

Draco, I'm in Agoura Hills, a little NW of LA proper.

acorad 01-06-2012 09:43 AM

Ed, ha! I just did a search for "the coupler whisperer." Thanks again.

hi wondering is someone might able to shed some light on this:
83sc. it started up fine this morning. i ran it for 10mins. I had replaced shifter bushings last week (Ed did a GREAT Job). i decided to adjust shift coupler again. after adjustment the car would not start. it cranks, has fuel, sparks but wouldn't start.

any ideas?
thanks
