I didn't get a 911 to be economical, but I was very surprised when I drove from Bothell, WA to my father's house near Boise, ID (541 miles) on a single tank of gas this past weekend.

It got 28 MPG going and 29 MPG on the return trip while going between 65 and 85 miles per hour (depending on the state). It did better than my Nissan and did it in style.

Gotta love the 911.....

I've always wondered about mileage . I have a 1986 Carrera Cab (stock) but it doesn't say anything about fuel consumption in the manual. What were these car rated from the factory ?

I agree. For a performance car of that vintage, they are not very thirsty.

In my German manual the mileage is printed for three different speeds and city. It is in liter/10 km though.

I still have the window sticker. It claims 18/25 mileage.

My 911 is essentially stock except for a Fabspeed cat bypass, Fabspeed muffler, and Steve Wong Chip. I use synthetic 20-50 motor oil and synthetic 75-90 transaxle oil.

It also has a "whale tail" which I'm sure kept me from breaking the 30 MPG barrier.

i get the terrible mileage. i can see the needle drop faster than my jeep cherokee, and, $75 to fill the tank. ouch

I think my carb'd 1970 911T gets somewhere in the neighborhood of 20mpg! It needs a little tuning as the Weber carbs seem to run quite rich.

The 3.2L cars are great on gas if you drive them that way on the freeway. They aren't bad around town either, but it's all relative to how you drive.

my 2.0 w/ webers got approx. 4 mpg.

it is being thuroughly rebuilt as we speak....

My SC gets 25 to 27 hwy and 8 to 10 at the track.

2 times I have driven my SC tp NJ, with an average trip speed of 74 miles per hour, I got 24 mpg. That works out to 504 miles. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?

my 89 Carrera gets an all-around average of 22 mpg (about 50/50 highway vs. city driving). That's with the SW chip by the way.

Trundling along at around 70 mph, my stock 930 averaged 24 mpg from Portland to L.A. For a 21-gallon tank, that worked out to about 500 miles/tankful. Of course, that meant I also got passed by Prius', who were probably still getting better gas mileage.

I have a 84 Carrera with a early 3.6. It has a SW chip, Elgin Super Street cams and springs, B&B headers and muffler, Authority mass air throttle body. and factory EFI. With out running the A/C and semi spirited highway driving I get 23MPG. I have occasionally got up to 26 MPG. But thats being well behaved.

My 83 SC gets horrible gas mileage. And at $1.19 per liter for cheap gas , this isn't good. Needs to be set up a little better.

I-71 to a NORPCA DE at Mid Ohio race track in early May. Averaged 31/32 miles per gallon following tractor trailers in the slow lane the entire 160 miles. Average speed of about 60 mph at 2600 to 2800 rpm in 5th gear. Tires 5 pounds over 29/36 psi recommendation.

My 3.2 with rebuilt engine, SSI's and chipped gets 22 in town and 29-30 on the highway at 70 mph. I usually can go around 580 miles on the highway before I fill up.

I drove from Seattle, halfway to Portland, back to Seattle, then ALL the way to Portland, and halfway back to Seattle on one tank of gas last weekend - on 17.5 gallons of gas, actually. Not even a full tank. (21 gallon in an '85, right?)

The trip meter said exactly 500 miles when I filled up, and she only took 17.5 gallons.
I figure that to be 28.5 miles.


By the way, on the way back to Seattle the first time, and back to Portland the second time, I was hauling ASS trying to get to a bank in Portland before they closed...(My wife forgot her I.D in Seattle)

Keep in mind the speedometer/odometer errors; easily can be 10% - usually in the direction that over estimates fuel mileage. Compound that with the differences in filling station pump shut-off levels - very inconsistent with the 911 gasoline tank fill system.

wow, you guys are imazing. I usually get 20 - 22 per gallon 90% freeway and I think my car is really good in gas mileage.

When I gassed up my car during our trip, I went a little overboard...at 17.5 gallons, gas was about to overflow.
