Stock 3.2 vacuum
Can any one tell me what a good vacuum range is? I am getting 8 inches and I want to know if that is the norm.
Thanks Joe D |

'Normal' varies by engine load -- idle, WOT, decel, etc. Nothing special about the 3.2 compared to other engines re: interpreting vacuum; try here:

I measured 2 cars (hot, idle @ 880rpm) a while back:
'87 3.2l with cat bypass (113k miles): 58kPa vacuum '89 3.2l stock (91k miles): 52kPa vacuum Cheers, Mark |

Assuming your gauge is connected correctly, at idle 8 in. Hg suggests fairly large vacuum leak; a steady 15-22 inches would be desired.
FYI, 52-58 kPa (kiloPascal) = 15-17 in. Hg Again, I'd suggest you take a look at the link I posted earlier, it does provide some useful diagnostic steps and standards.

I'm going off memory right now, but i think the bentley manual has the vacuum testing specs in it.

To the OP, 8 in/hg is too low. You must have a leak somewhere. All of the vacuum lines come from the back of the plenum under the throttle body. After that, there is 2 gaskets and 1 insulator per cylinder under the intake. I had 3 insulators that were crumbling. |

I have sprayed starter fluid in all those spots and have come up with nothing. Car idles great. With or without the o2 plugged in.

I have read that the bottoms of the intakes may not always respond to spraying. Unfortunately, it's one of those deals where you may need to remove the intakes in their entirety to have a look at all those gaskets and spacers.

I thought that very same thing before that maybe the spray cannot reach down below the shroud. Good to know.
