Electrical connection corrosion...what kinda goo?

Car was a no-start today. Had been sitting for some time, but started up and ran for a few days last week.

Today...no start. Engine cranked, spark produced, no fuel...something sounded suspiciously quiet. Fuel pump wasn't whirring.

I put the car on the lift and checked the connections to the fuel pump. They were slightly corroded, but not bad. My car hasn't seen so much as a puddle in six years & is stored in a climate-controlled shop.

Once I cleaned the connections, whirrrrr/vrooommm. Started right up.

So, question is: Is there something I can put inside the rubber boots covering the fuel-pump terminals to prevent corrosion? Silicone grease?

Use dielectric grease. You can get it at almost any FLAPS.

Clean up (get to new surfaces) and rub on any type of grease, conductive grease doesn't hurt, after all you are trying to create a connection. The idea is to keep moisture and corrosive gaseous contamination off the metal. Since the connection is an asperity type, the grease doesn't come into play, pressure is the variable, so any type of grease will work. Could be that some grease types absorb water, so that might be an argument for dielectric. Either way you are likely good for another couple decades.

Usually neglected: Hidden negative battery connection to the body inner fender. Open and clean connectors, bolt and body area then use dielectric grease. My favorite other items: Any other connectors like 14-pin, 6-pin CIS, 6-pin CDI in short; All connectors especially ground.

Even Vaseline is better than nothing.

Enjoy.

If you can find it use NO-OX ID. We use it on commercial battery connections. It's a very good corrosion inhibitor for electrical connections. Or just use battery post grease from a parts store.
