1989 motor mounts

Greetings,

During today's (unsucessful) attempt at replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator (noted in the BG44K thread). I happened to notice something unusual when viewing the motor mounts on my 89.

Although I don't have pics at the moment (but will tomorrow), my left side MM doesn't appear to be showing any degree of "rubber" as shown on the left side. I could run my fingers into the opening on the cross-member and easily detect a different spacing on one side vs. the other. The right side shows a healthy "rim" of rubber underneath it's bevelled washer....clearly the two side are not in symmetry. All parts look to be in place ......I'll look closer at the underside tomorrow....Here's what weird:

I've a slight incline to my driveway, as I back out each and every morning.....I learned real quick that the skid "hooks" can/would scrape if the exit angle from the driveway wasn't correct...nothing new there......I would always accomodate this need.

About 1 1/2 years ago, my wrench dropped the engine to take care of several things.....it was a few months later that I noticed that I could sometimes SCRAPE the exhaust tail pipe when exiting the inclined driveway (ODD)...only happened occasionally but certainly more frequent than BEFORE. Eventually, I noticed ACTUAL wear on the tailpipe (from it's scraping when exiting the driveway)....I never really gave it any further thought , other than to have the Wrench check things out, to make sure all was tight. One of the many parts handed to him on this engine drop was fresh motor mounts, MM bolts, curved and flat washers to reinstall.

It now looks asymetrical at the mounts, based on the amount of rubber showing, as well as finger clearances, side-to-side. The left side seems to be "lower" than the right...I've not yet measured anything but the exhaust "looks" a bit lower on the left side than the right. Not to mention that I just recently experienced a LEFT REAR BROKEN SWAYBAR MOUNT......what gives here? (broken sway bar thread exists, already)

Any suggested specifics to check? Should that rear cross-member be level (on level ground)? It almost looks like the curved washer on one side (has less pronounced "curvature" to it than the other.......I hope proper torque settings were applied......I provided all of the parts from Pelican.

Any observations on this. Something's amiss.....

BEST!

Doyle

Hey Doyle,

I recent changed my Motor Mounts to the Cabriolet Mounts. The Coupe/Targa mounts are very soft and will deform over time.

Left Mount removed, right Cab Mount installed.

good idea to replace the rears (if old) and somehow check that the cross member and all the washers/etc. are in correctly, the trans mounts are a different story

Sounds like the MMs were not installed correctly; at least one of them wasn't. Do you think he would own up to something like that and correct it?

Indeed, thatis what I thought, but I could literally push the rubber in with my finger nails. Opposed to the cab mounts on the right, very rigid.

you say you gave the wrench curved and flat washers. I believe all 4 washers are identical and should be slightly concave. They hug the curved rubber from above and below. I have also heard of the crossbar (to which the mounts bolt) being twisted or bent, because the mount nut was rusted in place and the bar bent before the mount's bolt broke loose.

I'll doublecheck. There would be a total of 4 (not 2) of the larger curved washers...THEN there are the smaller ones that go on top of those...
I AM curious as to the state of the crossmount.....we shall see.

I'll get some pics later today!

THANKS!

Doyle

If I can prove his error, he damned well better.

per side there are 2 large curved washers and one small lock/split washer (which you're calling the flat washer - it really isn't because a flat washer is not split). the 2 curved washers are identical (same part number in catalog).

I'm sorry,...for one: I didn't realize that it's split. It's flatness is characterized in relation to the large curved (or better: concave) piece....for two: I didn't realize that only one of the smaller washers was used per side,....I assumed (I guess) there would be another on the bottom that would mirror the top config,..I guess I need to review my PET again...

Pics coming very soon, Gents.

BEST!

it looks like yours does use flat washers. mine has split/lock washers which are much smaller than those (barely larger than the bolt; you can't see them under the bolthead).

As noted,...I didn't see any of the splits you mentioned......i.e.,: the pics demonstrates that there exists no such piece that you mentioned,..again: 1989.

Now,..back to the issue......off to the races...

Best,

Doyle
