weighed in the SWB today....1892 lbs
spring weigh-in of the '67 today at 1892 lbs, with a couple gallons of gas. stock was 2341 lbs so I've lost about 450 lbs. and it's at a 69/31 weight distribution. I guess that's what happens when it's a lot easier to take weight off the front than the back.
engine details here............. 3.0 dyno day - a pleasant surprise my perhaps optimistic goal is 911R weight of 1785 lbs. about a hundred pounds to go. it's a street car so I want it to still look more or less 'stock-ish'. I have the one-year-only aluminum vented window frames coming, and an RS gas tank so that should get me about another 40 lbs or so. also working on a single vacuum operated wiper instead of the motor and linkage assembly. it gets harder all the time. I walk around the car looking at whether or not I really 'need' a part. this lightening thing is a bit addictive. right now I'm at 7-1/2 lbs/hp, which is pretty darn good. here's a list of what I remember are the changes so far. fiberglass lids, fenders and bumpers. (I won't put glass doors on a street car ). lightweight fixed seats ( have you ever picked up a SWB tilt bracket?! ). lawn tractor battery. aluminum seatbelt hardware. m&k muffler. ( expensive and not real quiet, but light ). 944 turbo spare rims. lightweight steering wheel removed stock rubber mats ( amazingly heavy ). exhaust headers. glove box door removed ( but kept the radio ). rubber lid latches. any thoughts/suggestions much appreciated. how about 911R signal lights and I think TRE does a replica plastic door handle?
Lose the headline and glue some light weight carpet up there??? maybe no wt savings. How about a simplified defrost, hose hooked to a small fan (like a race car).

I wouldn't take anything else out of the front, I'd get anything you can out of the tail (exhaust, lights bumper, etc). When you're done with that I'd start putting things back up front until you get to around a 38/62 race balance... But that's just me...

the sound insulation under the back deck/rear seat area is heavy, if you don't mind the extra noise, remove it, and the side panel area in the back seat.....if you want to keep the car quiet, seek out dynamat or similar, lightweight product.

Personally I wouldn't change the rear lenses to the RSR look, the car looks much better with the original ones.
Car looks very nice, I too love the steelies look - very cool. ![]()

thanks for the input so far guys.
to be honest, I don't really like the looks of 911R signals, and would kind of get me away from the stock look. also, in fall I'll be glassing over the front turn signal holes, gives the car a nice look. the rims are ( I think ) the second lightest 'stock' rim out there. 10.5 pounds, fuchs are around 14-15 depending on size. I'm working on an air filter, but the usual rainhats aren't exactly light. I'm trying to adapt a plastic MFI housing to the carbs. or just run open stacks. the t-bars caps are gone, replaced by plastic plumbing caps. lexan rear and side windows will go in come fall when I do the body. and maybe pull-up straps for the side glass and ditch the regulators. most of the venting is gone already. also the clock and left combo gauge are gone. putting the ford dash vents in the holes. plastic door handles are on the list. rear seats and belts are off the table, it's still a family ( of four ) fun car. I'v got some hood lights and will put them on as soon as I find some fiberglass headlamp covers to replace the H-4's. I don't really want to remove any more sound deadening. it's already pretty noisy. finally, the weight distribution isn't exactly ideal, but it's a street car. and the only racing I do is drag racing, so it's not really hurting me there. the last hundred pounds isn't a necessity so much, this has just kind of gotten to be a hobby/obsession. my wife has pointedly suggested that I could drop 20 lbs without missing it, but that's just crazy talk. women...... sheesh ![]() thanks again for the input. By the way, there are fiberglass standard rear tail light housings floating around. Try a search on impactbumpers.com. Sweet car.

Front suspension from 911SC with aluminum crossmember will save you a few pounds and it's a better design than the SWB.
911S aluminum front calipers Lighter, smaller tires. 911R front and rear hinges to replace existing hinges (very heavy)

Unfortunately I've nothing productive to add to what's been said, though I'd echo the sentiment that it's probably time to start taking bits off the back and adding them to the front. It's lovely to be able to limit the spins to 360 in a 911, and more than 720 just feels like showing off. Lexan rear windows seem like a good idea and if you could get vented rear side panes it would look uebercool. To me at any rate. Your rear passengers might have their own feelings about that one.
Essentially, I just wanted to post to tell you that I'm loving your work and that your car looks fantastic. Understated and purposeful. Not so artsy or fussy as an iron fist in a velvet glove... more like a hand grenade in a sock. I love it. More pics. ![]() Edit - You're ahead of me on the lexan windows, so..... as you were. The only other thing I can think of beyond an expensive lwt exhaust is to start drilling holes in it. Last edited by loach; 06-10-2011 at 11:23 AM.. |

I might be making some of this stuff up...
1. Brake mods: cross drilled rotors, lighter calipers, maybe even lighter (smalle or just thinner) discs 2. drive train: lightened axles, light banana arms (you might have those already), lightened clutch, flywheel 3. drill holes where you can in the chasis (not a good idea) 4. drill holes in engine cross bar 5. Titanium or aluminum bolts/ nuts, hardware where you can afford 6. Aluminum pulleys 7. rain gutter delete |
