emissions failure
Just bought a 1988 930...the motor is not stock.
the emissions that failed are HC(ppm) and the CO(%). The other numbers are well with in spec... Can anyone tell me how to bring these numbers down. One guy on one post suggested that you put 1 gallon denatured alcohol to 6 gallons of gas to help bring some of the numbers down. I have searched the forums but can seem to find the specific information I am looking for. Chris

You failed an emissions test in Texas?????
You might try a tune up..... Post #s....the TX limits and what you put out..... Did the PO change the intake or the exhaust...... Can't answer this without information.....don't make us tell yer father.....

Can you detail the non stock additions to your engine? I can pass a mostly stock-non cat 930 in GA by first fully warming up the motor with a nice long drive. Then just before pulling to the testing station run it really hard. Make sure that a fan is available and pointed into the rear deck grille during the rolling test. You could also adjust the mixture and temporarily lean it out before the test as well.

Ok here are the results
HC 114 (162) and 244 (167) Fail CO 2.31 (1.04)Fail and 2.33 (0.94) Fail CO2 13.3 and 13.1 NOX 407 (1163) and 562 (1273) Dilution 15.61 (>6) and 15.43 (>6) The first number is at 2000 rpm followed by 2177 RPM (15and 25 MPH) The parenthasis number is the limit.. Hope that reads right. I just got this car and dont know squat about how it works....I had a 74 911 (CIS)and could do everything with it...but Im at a loss here guys. The engine is a 3.4 (not the standard 3.3)...Upgrade turbo...puts out about 400hp with 450 on the torque...and upgraded exhaust...Konklen intercooler....beyond that I have no idea.

Well...
Well the guy who does the test is actually a Porsche owner....and he is working with me...I can apply for a waiver, but that takes some time. I would like to pass so I can get this thing on the road...

Lean it down some. Do you have an afr? Lean it To about 16-17.1 idling and it should pass the co. Then adjust after and be happy.

In Texas there are non-emissions counties, and some where you have to pass emissions.
Large cities typically have emissions. Can you make it run leaner ? |

I would make it run leaner if I knew how to adjust it.
I dont see any mods on the engine. It looks stock except for the intercooler.

The car description doesn't mention a cat. A catalytic converter is intended to knock down exactly those emissions: HC and CO.
If it has a cat then it is probably dead. If not find one to put in for the test and take it back out when you are done. Maybe you can borrow an exhaust setup from someone local...

HC and CO are usually inverse....if both are high a control device is needed. Usually a good sport cat will do it...

Take a look under the rear bumper and see if there is a cat on there at all, most likely there isn't. My 83' had the same issue, and passed after we put a sport cat in place of the muffler...
