My new muffler - after ceramic coating - pics

I needed a new muffler because my old Tesh muffler had developed a rattle (broken baffle inside).

When shopping for mufflers, I read all the posts and the pros & cons regarding two out, etc.. and I decided that I wanted a close to factory muffler. I think the 911 sounded great when it was new and I don't need it to be loud to sound great (to me).

Checking prices, the Dansk 2in, 1out has various prices; Polished Stainless is $990 and Painted Stainless was $550. I figured I could save some $$ and polish it myself.

Then I read about ceramic coating and read that the benefits are that it can lower temperatures. Not exactly sure how it does this but I think it basically captures the heat and it radiates less thru the metal and more out the tail pipe - I think. And the ceramic coating can look just like polished or you can get various colors of silver/gray/black. They also sprayed the inside of the muffler (as much as they could).

Attached are photos of my before & after Ceramic. The muffler weighed 20.5lbs before coating and now weighs 21lbs so it gained 1/2 lb.

Brand New Painted Stainless - 20.5lbs:

After Ceramic Coating - 21lbs:

Now to get installed and hear how it sounds.....

WOW that looks nice. Was it expensive to get it coated?

It costs me $140 to have 1 of our mufflers polished like that just so there is a reference

This was $150 but that included $25 for them to remove the original muffler tip. I would have done that in advance if I had known it needed to be removed. They did all the stripping and they polished it after it was done. There are other colors that don't need polishing (i.e., Porsche gray & titanium). Polishing added to the cost and the other colors are a little less.

Unacceptable. Joking.

Who did the coating? Also, besides being curious of how it sounds, I'm curious to see if there is a noticeable difference temperature-wise.

It sounds very good. Not a quiet as I was expecting but it has that beautiful Porsche purr. I wish I had taken some temperature samples before but since it was brand new, I took it straight to the powder coater. If there is a signnificant difference, I should notice as my bumper always gets hot. Time will tell if I see a difference. Maybe even the temp gauge will show, but my car never runs too hot, usually around 180ish.

It was done at Caps Brite Hot Coatings in Fresno, CA. http://www.capsbhc.com/

ps. I promise to eat one less donut a day to make up for the 1/2 lb.

The ceramic works great on all exhaust parts. I used on the CAT to eliminate rust and allow easy removal for the bypass for racing.

Tech Line Coatings | Automotive ( Hi-Performance ) Coatings

You can use this Techline system yourself if you have a sprayer.

I had about 5 choices. The one I choose is polished aluminum. They also had titanium which would have been my 2nd choice but not shiny at all, more of a frosted look. The have black which is an entirely different coating and resists even higher temps. Also some grays and silvers.

The only potential issue was that they put the muffler in a tumbler after painting and that could dent fine metals. They looked over this muffler carefully to determine it could handle the tumbler (which is full of small round bb type polishers).

Sounds good. I was going to say, my temp gauge hardly ever reads above 180, but after driving it on a hot day, my rear bumper can get pretty hot. Either way, if it reduces underhood temps, it'll help prolong the life of the engine which will pay for the ceramic coating by a long run.

I did the same thing to my new Dansk 2 in 1 out. It was coated by Jet Hot Coating near Burlington, NC. They did an excellent job but the muffler is a lot louder than I expected it to be. Did the coating process burn off some fiberglass that was inside??? Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks!

Although I'm not 100% positive, I don't think there is any fiberglass in the muffler (there is in glass packs). Your question got me thinking but I found these photos on another post that helped me to understand "what's in there"
