Did it sound big like a bracket or maybe something a little lighter - like one of these bad boys?

This looks like the pivot that holds the spring in the center, but this is actually is the pin that holds the spring tension on the other end. It is just press fitted in and they fall out.

Remove the panel and take a peek.

When it occurred during window winding (or not), it could be the window winding clock spring anchor pin that fractured. Without it, the side window gently falls downward on its own. Does that sound close?

Remove the door panel and fish along the lower door area. It's a cylindrical piece with a slot cut in it (might be in two pieces now). Save it to match with the proper replacement piece. Refer to the parts area here.

thanks guys - making notes for when I can at the door panel and have a look. Sounds like a common problem - quite a bit out there on the topic.

Yeap, window regulator pivot.

If you have a motorized windows, you want to change/fix sooner than later it will strain the motor
