Has anyone tried the oil cooler air scoop???
Need some feedback re: the Oil Cooler Air Scoop that goes in where you take the right parking light out. Was considering cutting the area in back of the right fog light on my SC, however this looks like a possibility instead of cutting. Does it perform as Wayne says in the catalogue? What reduction in temp have you seen? I currently have a Lemke cooler in front with no fan.
Thanks for your input. Jack

i started a thread on this a while back... everyone agrees it's useless unless you are travelling at a decent speed. most of our overheating woes are occuring during stop and go traffic, etc..., so on the highway and on the track are the places where i'd imagine you'd see some change. for me and my fan-less '85, i decided it was probably a waste of money considering my car would only get really hot with the a/c running in stop and go traffic during the atlanta summers. unfortunately, it's pretty darn expensive to upgrade to an oil cooler with the fan.

Have you thought about cutting the bumper as Porsche did on some of the carrera's like this?

I have had the cooler scoop on my 85 Carrera for the last two years. I have noticed that my temp gauge seems to run a bit cooler with the scoop. It probably is of little value when caught in traffic but I have also noticed that when I finally get moving at a normal rate of speed the temp comes down quicker. I have to admit that I am paronoid about overheating my engine, I once had a very bad experience with another car. I not only have the scoop, but also a Heat Sheet and a Cool Collar. I also use Mobil 1 15w50. With all this stuff together I don't worry much about heat anymore. I was caught in heavy Chicago traffic last year on a very hot day ( 95+ F) and the temp gauge got only slightly above the mid-mark. I know that all of these gadgets have gotten doubtful reviews but if you put them all together there seems to be a difference. I'm willing to buy any insurance against overheating and I have been looking at those finned oil hose lines as a possible modification.

I have one and love it!
I have a Carrera oil cooler, with no fan. Where I live, I'm hardly ever stuck in traffic for more than 5-10 minutes. Which is good, because it works on the air flow principle. But I do a lot of back road spirited driving and a few track events a year, and I notice a big difference. The only draw back I can see, is in the winter, it takes forever to warm my oil up to check it. As soon as the thermostat opens, it seems it shuts down, because of all the cold air running over the cooler now. And I'm with dannov, I'm kind of parinoid of overheating! I run a cool colar too, and I'm going to get one of JM Products compact coolers, here in a month or so. Because it gets frickin hot hear in Northern California in the summer! |
