Help needed 79 Targa window adjustment
I have a 79 Targa with manual crank windoes and the original parallel arm regulators. Over time, it's taking more effort to raise and lower the windows. On the passenger side, there seems to be a point about mid-way up where it seems to be binding. It takes more effort to get through the bind and then once it "releases", the effort is easier. I've got the panels off and don't see any obvious issues with the regulators themselves. Is it possible that there is too much pressure between the front edge of the window and the back of the vent window frame making it tough to raise and lower the window? The regulators and slides seem to be in good shape, so I'd like to try the adjustment route before I start taking things apart. Is this the right way to go? If so, are there any good procedures to follow? I notice that the manuals emphasize the cross-arm type regulators - not much on the parallel type.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Take the door panel off and grease up all the components. Also make sure that all the bolts that hold the systems to the door are tight. I had a few loose ones and it was causing the system to wable and fall out of place on occasion. I have the little packet on how to adjust the system PM me your email and ill send it over to you.
Regards Dave

I have similar window problems on my 79 Targa. I am thinking that the sleeves in the metal frames need replacing. Long time ago that fixed a window problem on another car with old sleeves.
Any suggestions?

Some thing I have found useful is to roll the window up and then loosen all the bolts that hold the mechanism to the inside of the door. I then kinda of wiggle the window around a drop, then I push it to where it should be and rebolt every thing. This will help to deal with the fact that over the 30 years the car has been used, the metal bends and shifts a bit. By loosening all the bolts you allow it to settle to where it wants to be. As I said before the grease also makes a big difference. There are a lot of parts rubbing on each other in this system and as the door can be susceptible to trapping moisture you may find that these parts get a bit rusty. This in turn may make some thing not slide as it once did. Remember its a Targa the windows were meant to be down most of the time any way.
Regards Dave

When the windows become sloppy or hang up. More often than not you will find the pivots are worm or broken. The pivot runs in a track along the bottom of the window and one in a track attached to the door. If any are worn or broken the window will not slide in the track properly and that is what makes the window sloppy or hang up.
Our host sells new pivots. They look like the pic below but there are differing part numbers depending on which one you are replacing. They are not overly expensive but if you need to buy several you may find it cheaper to buy a used regulator and salvage the good pivots. Last edited by drcoastline; 02-05-2012 at 03:50 AM.. |
