Hi All,

I'm restoring a 1972 911 t-e. Well, I guess restoring is probably not exactly the right term, but I do not know a better one.

I am re-doing the body like a '73 RS. Probably the most common and boring body conversion to many, but I really like the styling of the RS. I've acquired steel fenders and larger rear flares (SC flares). I've also got a fiberglass ducktail and front spoiler. I'll be putting a fiberglass rear bumper on too (but I do not have that part yet). Color is still up in the air, but it will probably be done in Arctic Silver Metallic with PPG basecoat/clearcoat.

The engine I chose is a 3.0 (from a '79 SC). I've scrapped the CIS and replaced it with Weber 40 IDA 3C carburetors. The exhaust has come off and I am installing SSI heat exchangers, early muffler and a front mounted oil cooler. I'm using stock cams for now, due to budget constraints - but I would like to get something like Web cams 20/21 grind later when the budget recovers.

The interior will consist of high back stock seats from an '84, RS door panels, black carpets, white headliner and a roll bar.

Where am I with the project: I have stripped the car entirely and have the majority of the parts sitting in the garage ready to go.

Whats next: I am planning to fabricate the roll bar at a friend's shop in August (he builds vintage race cars and pro rally cars). I'll do some sand blasting, paint stripping and some minor body work (fix rust holes in the windshield corners and rear package shelf). Then comes paint prep and paint (another friend runs a body shop so he's offered to help here). While the car is still apart I plan to replace the fuel and brake lines and rebuild/replace brake calipers as needed. New weatherstripping seals will go on and the interior will be put in. In the meantime, I plan to rebuild and re-jet the carbs and install them on the engine. I'll be looking at the transmission, pulling it apart to replace seals to fix leaks and do a triage to determine whether it needs a rebuild. At that point I'll be ready to plumb the fuel system and sort out the wiring (it should be much simpler now with carbs). Once that is done I should be ready to install the engine and transmission and test drive it. That point seems so far away right now.

I started the project by purchasing the car last November. The car sat over most of the winter and I began slowly disassembling the car in the late winter. What started out as a plan to do a quick respray has become a much more extensive (expensive?) restoration project. But, I want to do things right so the wait is worth it.

My project has slowed some lately due to plans for a new house (need to build a garage there too) and my wife being pregnant for our first child. If plans work out I hope to have everything done by the Spring of '02. Maybe sooner if luck is with me.

Suspension and braking upgrades will be postponed until I have some driving time in. It has an S suspension with Konis and aluminum "s" calipers, so I think I'll be okay for a while. Larger torsion bars are probably in order with the heavier engine, but I do not want to rush into it until I have had time to sort it out on the road.

Well, that's my project. Good luck with all of yours, and thanks for all of the help you've given me (an may give in the future).

Charlie

CDS72911, Thats funny when I was building my 72RS look car I was also slowed by a pregnant wife and home purchase. It's strange, owning a home didnt become a priority for us intil my wife go pregnant. I sold a 84 Carrera I also had to help pay for it. But My little girl turns 1 in a week, the house has a nice big three car garage and the Porsche has been basically done for about a year now. It's a great feeling. Keep your head up, It will get finished.

BTW,I say basically done because these things are never really done. I too was running a 3.0 motor but stumbled across a Euro 3.2 so that is being installed next week. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

My current project is to get myself back in my garage to figure out how bad the damage to my 2.4S engine really is. My left cam nut came loose two weeks ago and sheared all the teeth off the cam timing gear with all those pieces plus more going down to the bottom of
my engine. I just spent $6k (in parts mainly) this past winter making my T engine into an S. It has been a dark two weeks for me. Boy did the engine scream for a month though.

Clay! --- Go Type 4 man!!! It is so much of a better engine and easy to make large for big power. The Type 1 will not live very long being a 2.5L.

This is not a Porsche project but I have been thinking of getting an early M-B diesel 4-speed for a bio-diesel experiment. Yes I would take used veggie oil and chemically mix it into a burnable diesel fuel called bio-diesel. Sounds crazy but if it works well I can make fuel in 50 gallon batches for about $.45-.50 a gallon. F%$#% OPEC!

Then again there is an early 912 sitting behind a garage that is screaming for help... http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

finishing up the chassis on my 924 race car project:

http://209.4.91.164/924project/

and finishing up the engine for the same car:

http://209.4.91.164/cylinder_head/

end goals?
145+hp, 7800rpm redline, 2400lbs WITH rollcage.

the car will be PCA GT5S (where it will be mid-pack or back-of pack because the competition in that class spends WAY too much for "club racing"). i'm shooting for HSR "Sports Challenge" class which looks to be a bunch of fun.

Well right now I'm waiting to get a set of headers to install on my bone stock 1965 Mustang with a stock 289 2v. Very weak right now but I feel that a few small parts will wake the beast within right up.

I have also picked the world's slowest painter to paint my 912. As of next month it will have been in the bodyshop for 1 year and it's still only in primer (under hood and door sills painted though) it really pi$$es me off, but oh well I guess thats why they say don't pay for somthing until you get it!

But while it's been in the bodyshop I have acquired a nice set of Fuchs to go on it when it's done.

Later,
Dustin

Counting the days!

Just adj. my rear koni's. But my real project is putting back together my 72. Got it back from the paint shop almost 2 weeks ago. Had all the chrome pieces powdercoated including the wheels and some suspension parts. Just installed the headliner and windows. All new rubber. Just about to hang the rs rear bumper, Then will tackle the rs's'front in a few days. Next comes the rear quack tail. Then off it goes to the muffler shop to have this new muffler installed that i hope works. Then back home where i will spend another 2 or 3 days fine tuning whatever I have missed.
Then it's clean up time; picture time and post time. This project was started back in Nov. Found out that most shops wanted around 7 grand to do the paint job. Decicded to do most of the work myself. Paint came to 2,400 bucks. This project has been going on since nov. My girlfriend hates me right now.

Just hope that you only see this when it's YOUR project and not the work of the Gauge Liberation Party!

The gauges are out at North Hollywood Speedometer to have the faces changed to white. I'll post a pix when I get them in this weekend.

Next the black and white tiles on the garage floor.

Just finished the rebuild on my 66' 912 engine; ran it in the garage last weekend for 1/2 an hour with good results; in the process of pulling the type four engine that I was using in the car while rebuilding the original engine (type4 was leftover from the six conversion of my 914 http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif )Plan on installing the engine in the car tonight!

Nickshu 07-26-2001 11:46 AM

Hmmm.

1982 911:
Rebuilding all brake calipers
Reinstalling with better pads
Installing larger torsion bars (this winter)
Track tires as soon as I find some wheels (this winter).
Bilstein sport shocks (this winter)

The Saab 900 decided to start leaking thru the head gasket recently...so I guess some of my time will be devoted to that little project.

Time and money...time and money. If I ever have both at the same time, I don't know what I'll do.

Nick.

Bought a house 4 months ago that needs everything, so time is limited. The new kitchen cabinets arive in two weeks.

AS for the P-car, I do have a peddle cluster rebuild kit, antenna mast, and dead peddle in the garage, waiting.

Unfortunately my Porsche projects are on the back burner because of a lot of other, ongoing pressing issues right now. I hope to squeeze in some time to put in on them once in awhile though. I'm changing the interior of my '67, 912 from a sort of cream to black right now. I only have to finish the door panels & rear quarter panels & dye the rear seats. I'm thinking of driving it for a little while before I sell it. My major project is my '72, 911. I'm surprised how many '72 projects are going on. Mine is unassembled. I have to paint the undercariage, suspension & brakes & I can put them back on the car. The body, fenders, doors, etc. need preping before I can get them painted. When I get it finished, I hope to end up with '72, 911 with dark wine colored paint, black interior, '75 S suspension with new weltmeister bushings, '85 Carrera brakes, rebuilt 2.7 (with Nikasils, J&Es, E cams, Carrera distributor, very finely balanced with coated bearing sufaces, pistons, chambers, exhaust ports, headers & webers). The engine & carbs are finished & waiting on everything else. I'm really starting to get antsy with not having time to work on it.

Well, the orange RS Touring is in base primer after a bare metal strip and detail fixes of the body. We plan on restoring it to partial RS Lightweight. As the car had about 65k on it when we took it apart 10 years ago (!) we just freshened up a few things mechanically. The sport seats are half way to being finished, the wheels and tires are ready, as are the motor and trans. Expect to see this one make good noises by the end of the year. The Spyder project is interesting but on the backburner for a while: 70 911E targa converted to a speedster with oe parts, 911R doors without window channels or windows (yep going with side curtains) R style rear lid and rear lights, gas tank filler poking thru the hood, C2 oil tank in 72 911 position with external filler, H-1 smoked headlight non fluted lenses with piaa mini projectors (spiders have multiple eyes, get it?), coil over suspension with ERP bearings and bushings, Charley bars, 915 with short gears, ltd slip, RSR oil cooler pump and spray bar, dual front fender mounted oil coolers- 911R style, replica 59 speedster seats, custom guage fascia with the oe guage mechanisms behind it), various louvers here and there , emulating the 50's RSK and 550 Spyder feel. Current plans call for a built 3.2 with high butterfly RSR injection, twin plug, headers, cams, etc, etc etc. Color to be metallic anthracite with silver and metallic black stripes- real subtle stuff. About 2 years to go on this one, sigh...

Haven't put a post up in awhile so I might as well update here. My '79 930 is painted and back in a garage. I say "a" because I don't have one of my own and wanted to let the paint cure for a bit before getting abuse from the Hawaiian sun. I am collecting pictures and might start a web page. Paint isn't perfect yet, couple of spots didn't come out right. Black is a pain. Painted the gold BBS's too. Girlfriend says it looks nice. Wont see it for another week, I am in Seattle going to school. Oh well. Talked to a guy who races an older 911 and owns a shop, will be doing upgrades to all suspension parts. Well, when I recover from an $8,000.00 dollar paint job.

rattlsnak 07-26-2001 06:10 PM

Ive been working on and off for 8 months on putting a C2Turbo engine into my SC. Well tonight I got it running!!!!!!!! I have a couple of "issues" still to work out and i will post a message on the details later.
