Recommended Early Car Oil Filter ??

Which oil filter should be used in the early cars? I have a 77' 2.7 that is going in my '69.

I have done a search and have been crushed by an avalanche of use this oil vs. that oil threads but I can't seem to find a definitive list of proven filters that will work.

Does it even really matter if you are changing your oil every 3k?!

Please qualify your answers for future searches. I hate popularity contests when it comes to performance

Value, flow vs. filtration size comparisons, etc. would be highly appreciated (if the info even exists)

The Mahle filter from our host seems pretty reasonable

btw-
List of 'approved' oils for non-roller cam cars ie-early 911's with the correct ZDDP content based on my searches. (not definitive I am sure).

Use that OC-61 if you are using the stock '69 oil tank.

If you upgrade the system to a '74 and later tank (highly recommended), you'll want an OC-54.

Thanks Steve, I know that my donor car had (I assume) a 77' tank installed or rather hacked into place. Do the later tanks run a larger capacity? different baffles? What is the downside to me using my stock '69 tank?

(btw- my oil list comes from HarryD's post on the S reg. and you were one of the people giving it the nod Thanks for your continued help with these old German cars!)

I poked around to find the answer to the capacity question...

Oil tank capacities were:

'64 - '71...9 liters
'72 ..........8 liters
'73 .........10.5 liters
'74 - '84..11 liters
'84 - '89..11 liters + 2 liters in the oil cooler & lines for 13 liter capacity

Oil Capacities
capacities of '72 and 964 oil tanks?
Oil tank capacity, any changes over the years?
Oil pressure drop on hard braking. My answer with Pics

Stick with the Mahle it is excellent quality for a good price. Buy them from our host 3-4 at a time and you're good to go. In a pinch when I have planned poorly I have used a Purolator from the local FLAPS.

You can't upgrade a 69 to a 73- tank without cutting the sheet metal in the engine compartment.

Mahle OC 61, buy a case and as they say in Kings County "fuggedaboudit"

Mahle only.
I've seen the insides of a Fram filter get sucked out in 5 min of running.
On a new motor I ran it just enough to flush out the oil and assembly lube,
I used a fram because I knew I was going to throw it out in minutes and didn't want to waist a more dollar filter .
When I took the filter off the filter element paper was coming out of the center hole about 2in
I'de heard of it happening and witnessed it for myself.

Bryan,
You know the old saying.."opinions are like *********s...everybody has one", so here's mine.....I have been using the Mahle filters, combined with Valvoline VR-1, 20W50 with very good results. I have to admit that this is my opinion, without documentation/quantification. I have not performed any exhaustive studies or research on the subject.....but I have taken an engine or two apart, after many miles, and been impressed with the condition of the internals.

regards,
Al

speaking of internals...how is the 2.7 looking?

Thanks for the feedback guys! Mahle OC 61 is the consensus I am getting on and off the boards.

Regarding the oil tank....I will probably have to upgrade to an oil cooler or expand my 69 tank. We will see how hot she runs....soon I hope!

PS- I have found vr1 20w50 non synthetic for 5.50 /qt so I am going to run that for now.

Al, I haven't looked inside ..since the motor ran I think I am going to get her back together and make it run/drive then drain oil and refill with good fluids..run again and see where we are at.

Here is a picture from the donor car....PO 'custom' fit the 77 oil tank to the 69!

Back to cleaning the engine bay for me!
