993 17' wheels on a 86 Carrera
I came across a set of 993 17' wheels at a ridiculously good price and want to put them on my 86 Carrera. Any advice on exactly how to get them to work?

You'll need adapters somewhere between 1.5" to 2".

Adaptors meaning spacers? To clarify: I need to buy the spacers stick them on and the tires are ready to be installed?

Depending on the wheel offsets, you will need 1 inch spacers for the front and 2 to 2.5 inch spacers for the rear. Unless you install longer wheels studs you will need to get spacers that are bolted to the existing wheel hub. The "993 wheels would then bolt to the spacer using the factory lug nuts.
It can certainly be done but the spacers could cost you a few hundred bucks.

While they look like an upgrade visually, and may be a good bargain - they are like lead ankle weights for your 911 and will substantially impact performance...you will definitely be able to tell you added all of that unsprung weight...and like many others once the look wears off you will try to find lighter alternatives.
I would invest the money in a lighter weight option. My 02.

FWIW, I love the look (I presume these are the rims you're considering?)

if they are 55mm ET wheels, you need 1.25 spacers in the front and 1.5 in the back.
if your car is low, you will need to roll your front fenders. ![]()

My '87 cab came with what appear to be the same wheels at in Paul's pic and they were 17s. This was before I really understood all the issues but they did, on occasion, rub on the driver's side front wheel well. Typically on right turns with some sort of bump. It would hit on the rear lip. Rears were fine. They looked good and I really liked the wider rear wheels.

The wheels are the same as on Paul & Shaun's cars. Great looking cars, btw.
So I need to order 1.5 spacers for the back & 1.25 for the front. I assume I can install them myself? My car has not been lowered, it is stock, but what does 'roll the fenders' mean & involve if I need to have it done? Thanks. |
