My new lexan grill

A picture of the new grill I made for the rear deck. I kind of bar-b-qued the old one. Made this on a homemade cnc machine. I think it came out OK.

That sure is pretty, have you tested the air flow?

Haven't tested air flow but it should be ok as the grill also sits up a bit all the way around the outside of it. It is probably not much smaller area that what was there before as the old grill had a mesh design between the ribs. If need be I left room for a couple of holes on either side of the porsche letters. There is also no seal around the rear deck so air can also get in there.

It's pretty. I think you are seriously restricting the airflow the the carbs and fan. I guess if it doesn't get hot and runs ok then it doesn't really matter.

There is about 70 square inches of open grill not counting what goes around the outside. On most cars there is an evaporator stuck there also restricting flow. Will have to see how it works.

Will you be producing these for sale? I'd like one with round holes, kinda like you see on the floorboards...

Danny,

Is that your car? Where did you get the gas pedal?

No, not mine. I Google'd "Porsche Drilled Floorboard" to get the example pic.

No plan to reproduce. If all you want is holes a jig saw and drill should do the job just fine.

As for the lights it would look kind of neat on a honda streat car but this one is an XP autocross car. The rear grill was not really made for pretty it just came out that way. I fried the original plastic grill in a engine fire last year. For the most part the only damage. I was going to smooth out and sand down the original grill but a piece broke out so I just decided to make this. I was going to paint it black but figured paint wouldn't stick well anyhow so just left it clear.

Hard to say, but a neat piece. I thinking going 'all horizontal' at the sides/ends (though I didn't show that here) maybe, and adding more slots (shown), $.02. Hope a certain company doesn't mind the idea... Nice work.

I seriously doubt there will be a lack of air... nice job!

BTW...for laxan if you put a small radius on the cutter and use WD-40 liberally the finish will be clear as opposed to white chalky... for the slots, run down the middle then climb cut the slot edges for a nice finish - sharp sharp sharp tools work best in plastics as they create less heat and therefore less burning/melting.... in case that is of interest to you...

Thanks for the cutting tips. I am totally new to the CNC machining world. Built the router originally out of wood as an internet DIY then converted it to 1" steel tubing. I don't have alot of tooling for it and only have EMC2 and an old autocad 14 for software. So when I get anything useable I am happy. But tips like yours really help.

I think you are seriously restricting airflow into the engine compartment. The fan that cools the engine pulls a very large amount of air through there!

Yep, tried something like that once. The temp light went off all the time as well as my afr's went crazy. Something to be said for mesh and helping air flow not hindering it.
