Please help me with my ride height

I have a 1978 SC Targa and the rear of the car was sitting very low. My mechanic and I raised the rear by adjusting it by 1 spline on the rear side of the torsion bar. It did raise the car but it raised by about 4 inches. That is definitely to much. I only needed about a 2 1/2' raise. Is there another way to adjust the ride height in smaller increments?

Splines on both ends need to be turned to get smaller increments.

For instance, if one spline was turned on the outside, the inside needs to be turned the reverse direction.

Since there are a different number of splines on the inside vs. the outside, it allows adjustments in finer increments.

I'm with Hodgey. Something is a drift or in a bind. If this is the case would two splines get you full travel? I bet my 72' doesn't move 4" total wheel travel. Rob is completely correct, but I still feel something is wrong. There are calculators on this site that can help you do this with a simple protractor and knowing TB's and weight of rear. Do you have adjustable arms?

Good luck

As Pete's link shows, go to Harbor Freight, buy yourself a magnetic angle finder. Punch the weight of your car, torsion bar thickness, and desired ride height and the angle calculator will tell you what spring plate angle to set your car. Can easily be done in one's garage without the help of a mechanic.

To change the angle in small increments, as said above, you rotate one end clockwise and the opposite end counter clockwise, or vice-versa. When you do one side, the method clicks, and when you do the other side, it takes like 5 minutes.

Thank you very much guys, I think I figured it out, I simply have to adjust the splines on the other end of the torsion bar that has smaller incriments and will give me the adjustment I need. Again my felloe Pelicans showed a true interest and thats great.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!

What is the condition of your control arm bushings? I frequently see rear squat due to these being worn out. Plenty of choices in replacements. It's best to adjust rear ride height with a fresh set installed.
