What type of Grease is best for lubing the shifter
Hi,
I replaced my shift coupler bushings as well as the ball cup and shaft bushing. When I did this, I put white lithium grease in the ball cup bushing and the shaft bushing. While I had everything apart, I cleaned the shifter housing and put white lithium grease on the springs and where the shifter rubs inside the housing. I'm wondering if I should have used a different/thicker grease inside the shifter housing as it feels too slick to me. I'm thinking a thicker grease (like bearing grease) would have been better for this area. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks......Vern p.s. the shifting is perfect now - just feeling a little too easy. |

Some grease is better than none. However lithium grease is fairly minimal but adequate. Just don't create any moisture in that area since LG is water soluble. I use waterproof synthetic grease (e.g. wheel bearing grease) or equivalent. As in most things needing spot lubrication, apply it sparingly. The more you have, the more it attracts things (dirt, dust, bugs, leaves, hair, pastry crumbs, crumbling upholstery, etc.)
I do see a lot of aluminum shift housings with signs of water corrosion. Is that from rain/snow brought in by driver/passenger or just spilled coffee? Sherwood |

I think it'll be fine.
I used Redline synthetic bearing grease on my shifter parts because it's what I had on hand. Unless you are abusing the crap out of the components any quality grease will work.

Vern -- I used white lithium too; year an a half later I still have no complaints . . .
