Post Timing a 2.4S Engine

Hi, I bought a 2.4S Engine a couple of years ago used. It was rebuilt balanced ect ect. The P.O. said the timing on this engine is 0 degrees t.d.c. I refused to run it that far advanced and am runing about 2.5 to 3 degrees B.T.D.C. About 38 to 40 Degrees After T.D.C. With the Vac. line Disconected at 6000 rpm with no problems. And it runs very nice. I have run this motor at the O degree mark and it seems to have alot more power! I Run Premo fuel,92 all the time.. Just in case. At 0 degrees this motor feels like there is more power above the rev limit it just keeps pulling! From 6900 to 7300 rpm it seems to squat a little more in the back. At 2.5 degrees at idle, it seems to fall a little flat about 7100 till 7300 rpm. My question is, I have a Drivers Ed day this Monday And I am thinking of running it at Odegrees again. Would you think that with a engine with 8.5 compression you could run alittle advanced with premo 92 fuel ? Or could the cam timing be set to run a little advanced. I cant tell if it is a RS Spec engine But people who have experance say its a strong 2.4S engine but is not a 2.7RS Spec PS Drivers ED this Monday at PIR in Portland Oregon tech starts at 7 am.. Thanks

Wayne,

I think you may be somewhat confused about what is advanced timing, vs retarded ignition timing.

Do you know what distributor (Bosch part number) is on your engine?

Do you have the '72-'73 factory 'spec book'?

If not, I suggest you take a look at the following thread which has scanned exerpts from the spec book and factory service manual regarding the ingition timing and complete advance curves for both '73 'S' and RS engines!

Warren My dist part # is 0 231 169 005.. Bosch.. I know that the vacuume line is sopose to retard it at idle .. That is the figure I am refering to.. It runs stronger at 0 degrees with vac line connected at 900 +- 50 rpm than 5dgrees btdc at 800 +- 50 rpms I cant tell how far advanced it is running at 6000 rpm with vac line disconnected because my marks or at 35 degrees witch it is a little 3 to 5 degrees past that.. I hate that test btw and so do my neibors So can I run it that far advanced with primo fuel? Why did the previus owner set it at 0 degrees with vac line connected insted of 5 degrees btdc.. Why dos it run so much stronger ? Can I run it that way?? Thanks

Wayne,

OK, that is a '72 'S' distributor, same specs as '73 'S' ... uses the 'mirror-image' points!

I suppose the previous owner used the TDC timing because he wanted to use the RS 2.7 specs, but was ignorant of the fact it had a distributor with a lesser amount of centerifugal advance and more initial advance cranked in!

The factory says 38 degrees maximum advance, and you measure it with a timing light that either displays the advance or can be 'dialed in' and the read off a dial.
