Fitting a passenger side mirror on a '77 911?

I'm about to buy a 1977 911 - they did not come with a passenger mirror as standard, but I want to fit one. It think the guy has one for me, but I have no idea what is involved in fitting it. it it just a simple few holes drilled and screwed into place? I won't be doing it myself but is it a quick job?
Thanks

it mounts in a slightly different position than the driver side, templates/measurements were published long ago in Pano, it also should have a reinforcement piece on the inside to keep the door from cracking

all factory '74-89 flag mirrors are identical as far as i know, and some parts are still available from Pelican, but complete assemblies are only found used

i do have one used right side mirror FS complete with template & NOS reinforcement part that i b'ot from E.A.S.Y. and never installed cuz i sold the Targa (i paid $200 for it plus tax & ship)

I will sell it shipped free USA for $150 - USPS Priority mail medium flat rate box - it is white, rubber is OK and glass is OK; you would need to get a new base gasket from Pelican

I also have a PAIR of electric mirrors from an '80 SC - complete with wiring and switch - (in primer)

- offers considered

- PM

Monster,

The instruction and template is available in the Porsche shop manual. PM me your email address and will forward one to you. It is a few minutes job and a lot easier if you know where to place the mounting holes. The guide or template would do the trick.

Check to see if your passenger door has these plugs. My car is a '74 (same body as yours, probably different mirrors).

My passenger side mirror is about 1 inch closer to the rear of the car than the driver side. I have no idea if it was installed at the factory or prior owner. I do know that on my 914, the welded nuts were there by the factory and I only had to drill holes to access. So, maybe a 911 is a similar situation.

Tidyboy is offering incorrect information ! The passenger mirror mounts in a different location further aft, about midway in the fixed glass of the door frame. Why? You sit on the left side of the car and if mounted the mirror further forward , you won't be able to use it.
Check the other posters' information regarding a template. You will have to remove the passenger side door panel , to place the inner reinforcement plate.
Wiring? its about an 8 hour job to remove and install all the looms- a driver door mirror harness is different than a two mirror install. So keep it manual

I would use the template if one is available. My car might not be in the correct spot (as I mentioned it was on the car when I got it). However, I see thru it perfectly without any obstructions.

Thanks for the replies guys. The car is a Carrera 3.0 - and its right hand drive. I'm going to see what the guy says who I'm buying it from. he's just finishing it off and I'll have it in two weeks!

I thought of doing the same to my 79 targa. It also came originally with only the driver side mirror. The other mirror really is not necessary because of the excellent visibility out of my Targa window. For a good passenger side mirror installation you need a good reinforcement inside the door panel. And then you want the electrical wiring of course. Otherwise the mirror is hard to adjust correctly. You also have to add a mirror selection switch to your driver door. Its a lot of work. And I think it's mostly for outside cosmetics. That's why I gave up on it. On the other hand we are unique:

Is there a template for the 74-75 mirror in the manual too? I have a '77 with only drivers side mirror and have plans to install 74-75 chrome mirror on both doors.

Hello Henrik,

chrome mirrors won't fit on your 77 without modification. You will need to fit in an adaptor or do some welding...

This isn't necessarily true. Chrome Durant mirrors have a big enough of a base to fit over the holes in the door for the wiring of the power mirrors.

For the original poster thinking of adding a passenger side mirror. What color is your car? I ask because if it's something very common (like Guards Red) and non-metallic, you could probably buy a passenger side door with mirror and mount it up. For ease of installation, I'd keep it manual.

Of course, if it were me, I wouldn't install a passenger side mirror. But if visibility became big enough of a concern that I absolutely had to install a passenger side mirror, I'd use chrome durant mirrors because they are manual, I like the way they look, and installing them is a reversible mod.

Yes, I know. I just want to be sure I drill the new holes in the right location.

I just purchased a 76 Targa with no passenger side mirror. I'd like to leave it the way it is but I'm concerned about changing lanes safely. Hopefully I'll be in the left lane most of the time but unfortunately you do have to jump into the right lane occasionally. Any input from owners without right side mirror would be appreciated. Why did some cars come through without the mirror, was it an option?

I've had my 76 targa without a passenger side mirror for over 27 years, and haven't had any issues changing lanes yet . Visibility out of these cars is great.

I'm glad I left mine as is -- when I bought my car I thought about blacking out the chrome trim and roll bar and adding a passenger side mirror, but I'm really glad that I've kept everything original like it came from the factory.

I've driven plenty of cars for many years without the passenger side mirror. It's takes a bit more awareness, but it's not a big deal...you get used to it.

Side mirrors.......

Is your car a left or right drive car? I have two (2) sets of flag mirrors in my garage collecting dust. PM me your email address and will send you some pictures and pick your choice (blue or brown).

Tony
