Chromed fuch dilemma

Hi all, so the previous owner of my beloved had the wheels chromed and they are all bubbled and peeling. Does anyone know how i can get this stuff off so i can polish them up?

Chroming process embrittles the Aluminum. Needs special treatment like a 'bake' to regain the ductility but without overaging the Aluminum. Tricky.

Oh, man.....Sell them and start over.....

Chrome on Alum wheels suck once it starts to lift and it will in time.

The Polisher will have to grind it back to the alum, then polish it. It can be done, but how much money do you want to spend on it ? Under the paint its chromed too, the chromer dips the complete wheel.

I work at a car dealer. We offered chrome wheels in the past. Just about every wheel we ever chromed has come back due to lifting chrome. We do not offer it any longer...

Below is one of my clocks. It was once chromed and it took two polishers to get all the chrome off just the lip. Im probably 80 bucks into the polishing... way too much ! One of those leaning experiences...
Looks great now, but way too much money spent...

Good Luck,
Don

I think places like Wheel Enhancement will take your old Fuchs in trade toward a new set.

Talk to Harvey Weidman or Al Reed. They probably will blast them and polish.

If you want to sell them cheap I would be interetsed in 2. One to turn into a pub table for my garage and now I want to make a clock to match.

I sand blasted the chrome off a pair of door handles fairly quickly. Then found out that it was highly toxic

I don't know if there are any side affects on aluminum wheels, but certainly for steel, take them to a chromer and they can easily dunk them and reverse the chroming process.

I had chromed Fuchs (7's & 8's) which were chromed front and back. I hated the look but loved the size of the wheels. In the end, I ended up selling them, as it was cost prohibitive for me to refinish them to original Fuch style. The average cost to refinish was $300 p/wheel, which was too rich for my blood. I guess if you have the equipment to do it yourself, that will save you quite a bit.
