Copper-faced Clutch

I've got a clutch assembly that has copper facing on the pressure plate (NEW) and flywheel (RECONDITIONED, with only 1mm wear on the teeth). Two asbestos discs (NEW) are included. Pressure plate is marked #102 103 F&S 1 71, TYP215, and dated 2/71; disk has a sticker #1861 327 002; no markings on the flywheel.

I've heard of this type clutch, but have never seen one before. Is it possible that the assembly is for a racing Porsche such as a 906?

Pictures would help.

Is this for a 901 or for a 915 transmission?

Wear on the teeth? The ring gear?

The 2.8 RSR had an aluminum pressure plate center - the actual plate and not just the annular housing. It has a sprayed coating. I had a flame spray place (alas, now out of business) respray and remachine a couple of these when they showed wear.

The RSR flywheel, though, is just steel (lightened to be sure), so it doesn't need any kind of surface coating.

F&S stands for Fichtl und Sachs, who made all the pressure plates for Porsche. I think the "TYP215" stands for 215mm diameter for the clutch plate, which suggests this is for the 901 transmission? Because my RSR diaphragm springs (for which I have some of the numbers from them) are TYP225, for the 915. But by 1971 the 911 transmission was in use, and it uses a 225mm disk same as the 915? Same flywheel anyway, just uses a push clutch instead of the later pull type.

i have one of those on my 914-6 GT - came that way from germany

- it is an early 911S piece & was used on various competition engines due to light weight & stronger springs for greater clamping

1967 911S 215mm clutch. Only used the one year since the copper face tended to be a problem. Otherwise it is a standard 911 clutch used for most 2.0 engines including 914/6.

I have a couple of the Aluminum-Copper face pressure plates. They will not last long. The Copper is too soft. This is why it was only a one year deal. The later non copper faced versions hold up much better.

You may want to see if Kennedy Eng. can remove the copper and respray it with a more durable coating.
I love those early 911S aluminum pressure plates. I have been running a modified one on my race car for years.

@ Please note that the Aluminum Pressure plates require the use of a thinner clutch disc. If you use a standard 911 disc, when you bolt everything into the car, the clutch will never disengage.

There is also an Alfa shop in Ca that builds "New" 215mm aluminum pressure plates. These will bolt right on to the Porsche.

Thanks Plavan, the two asbestos discs are thinner than standard discs.
