A common problem...
on older high mile 911's. Search for a fix on this site. A kit is made that swaps it out with a new catch with a reinforcement plate. It's a straightforward, if a bit tedious, job. I think Wayne's project book includes the fix - his book is great for many older 911 maladies....

Look....
under Pelican new parts catalog:
'74-'89 911/Carrera Chassis panels and sheet metal look for: Door stays Reinforcement $29.95 & new OEM stay $33.00 A nice little project, oh and it's not a bad design, it's just that most 911's are driven way past what is considered "death" to most cars. Older air cooled 911's are cult cars which are usually repaired numerous times and driven many hundreds of thousands of miles - my SC is pushing 200k. Most '70s & 80's cars were lucky to see 100k miles before "dying." Last edited by G450X; 08-29-2011 at 09:58 AM.. |

Do you know if this reinforcement kit for door side and not for body side...
I don't understand the Picture of this kit on Pelican: Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-PP911167 I need to fix reinforcement for the stay at the door side where 2 bolts should be secured and not at the body where pin located...!? Thanks |

Door stay picture on Pelican....
That picture is a bit confusing if you have never seen the inside leading edge of the door. The plate fits behind (and reinforces) the door stay. The photo shows how the kit reinforces the leading edge of the stay from the inside.
I installed one on my broken driver's side door (the most used and usually the first to go bad) last year. The kit includes instructions, but you do need a new stay as well to go along with the reinforcement kit. |

Just be sure to get the correct part as they changed designs sometime around 69 or 70. The later model has 1.75" bolt spacing. It's an easy job once you have the door panel off. You may also find the replacement part has a different thread by one metric size. If your door metal is ripped there is a reinforcement plate you should get but it's a separate part. Check out our host's website under 911 body and seals section.
Here's a photo of my door stay I recently replaced. I used a regular phillips bolt because the original hexhead was wrong size and in small towns of the deep South bible belt hardware stores are all closed on Sundays. ![]() Last edited by bfunke; 08-29-2011 at 05:05 PM.. |

I believe your 78 is the same as my 82. I just replaced mine this afternoon. Takes around an hour and a half. I checked my passenger door also but it is hardly worn. A job for another day. I am also a new owner and have found this site invaluable. Good luck with the repair, Tom

i fixed mine with some big washers where the bolts ripped out. But you need to be sure the stay is moving smoothly as it should so it doesnt do any more damage

Not to sound like a negative ninny, but that brown door is pretty torn up. This is going to require a little more work than the standard reinforcement installation to provide a long term solid and aestheticly pleasing solution.

Hi everyone, just bringing up an old tread. I've got noisy door stays and want to lubricate them, does anyone know the best way to maintain the door stays and were to grease them?
I have some grease I was going to put on the top and bottom of the check strap that slides into the door and then put some around where the pin slides in. Any recommendations, or advice would be great. Thanks |
