Tapping around the dust cap periphery with a short heavy-ish hammer and small cold chisel works very well. The small chisel can be angled outwards whilst in the lip of the cap . Just work the opposite points of the compass and keep rotating the strike as it backs off.

The hardest part of doing this, when I did mine, was getting the dust caps off. I tried several different approaches, but found this thread, made the tool, and I can pop them off with no problems now.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/183349-removal-dust-cap-frt-wheels-bearings.html I suggest properly tightening your bearings first. You'd be surprised how easily they can loosen. To do it you'll be able to get a good look at the grease and then decide on whether or not you'd like to pull the hubs off to get a closer look at the existing bearings. |
Anybody have any idea what the front spindle oring is? I dont remember every replacing one before??

Its not something that's replaced very often. Only way you can get to it is if you pull off the collar/spacer that is lightly pressed onto the spindle. The o-ring is #23
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329328933.jpg No reason to replace ever replace it. Its like a gasket that seals the collar to the spindle to avoid the oils in wheel bearing grease from leaking out from between the collar and spindle. |
As per KLT... I wont be using the one that I ordered.

Hi Mark,
Lets keep in touch. I had the same problem - and still do on the front left wheel. I have a small thunk and a shake when I grab the wheel like you describe. I changed the wheel bearings in that wheel and nothing changed. So, I have something else loose, but, I cannot locate it. Let me know what you find. Ray |

I also like that thing - even tho there are other ways to remove the cap. Did you just cut a pipe in a bandsaw? or did you need to do some work on a lathe also? |
