Throw out bearing play
I separated my engine and trans today and noticed that the throw out bearing seemed to have some lateral play. There was no radial play, but there was enough lateral play for the bearing to even appear to pivot.
There were no problems with the car the last time it ran, but it isn't easy to separate them without a helper. I am wondering if I might have torqued the bearing and toasted it. I hate to waste $160, but I hate even more to put it all back together, only to have to pull it out and do it right the second time. Can there be any play in throw out bearing?

I measured the the lateral play. There is about .4 mm of lateral movement at the bottom, doesn't appear to be much at the top. No radial play.
Anyone have the engine and trans separated that can comment? Thanks.

Swap it out Brother and take a close look at the fork as well. Much cheaper to swap then having drop the engine/trans the second time. Ask me how I know
![]() ![]() ![]() I would check the pilot bearing and guide tube as well.

Thanks. I think I convinced myself to swap them even before your response. There is too much lateral pressure pulling the pp fingers, which is where my bearing seems to be weak. Driving season is short enough in Pittsburgh, I wouldn't want to be down to pull the motor in the middle of summer.
The fork and guide tube have less than 5k miles on them. I will do a visual check, but they should be fine. Thanks again.
