That is over the top. Thanks for sharing. I bet that drivetrain weighs as much as the rest of the car.

When back in N.Y. I'll pm some of my pics.

I'll be watching your thread as I have an idea of a power plant swap into a 912 but using all german power.

Engine to tranny mating and clutch operation is what I am weak on so these solutions are most of my interest.

I have only a few parts and will be stockpiling the pieces and than dive right in.

Good luck and we'll be watching.

deathbyspoon,
I wish I live near you so I could give you a hand with your build and learn from you. I live way down south from you, the OC. :) I love working on cars but I don't have the same skill set as you do.
Quick question: since you live in CA, I assume that you will have smog devices installed with the swap?
Good luck with the build and thanks for sharing with us the process.

Tom
Thanks for posting. OC isn't too far!
I'll be the first to admit that I don't have near the skills of some of the guys on the board. The car is still a long way from being done, and I'm just trying to get it rolling. After the fab work (cage, roof, radiator mounts/vents) are done, then I'm going to take the whole suspension apart again so i can re-coat the fenderwells and make it look as good as it'll run.

Smog? that's tricky...

deathbyspoon 08-13-2012 10:12 AM

Made a little progress...Though having these nice shiny parts on there made me realize how disgusting the rest of the underside of the car is. Once the car comes back from fab, I'll attack the 29 years of neglect.

Managed to do a little more work on the car this weekend. I've been waiting for some parts to come in for the front suspension, and they're still not ready, so I had to re-use my oem rubber bushings for the time being. I'll have to take them off, but at least it gets the car rolling.

And I re-booted and cleaned up the steering rack as well.

And a little bit of elbow grease, sweat, and patience:

Managed to get both arms on, and the driver side strut yesterday...I'm trying to have this rolling by the end of the week.

Looking good!

seems like an awful lot of threads showing on your tie-rods. When I lengthened my front a-arms, I had to make lengthened tie-rods to go with them to ensure enough thread depth. Is that in the works?

I ran and extra 1", I think or maybe 30mm of length on the a-arm.

Looking great!

Doug -
Good eye! I qctually just butted the tie rod against the end for the picture, theres no threads engaged yet. I was in a rush yesterday and thought it looked more complete for the pic.

The car will be getting camber boxes, so im hoping between rhose and the rod ends, i can get the camber/adjustment i want without having to lengthen the tie rods.

There can be an advantage to running lengthened arms in reducing the scrub radius, which affects steering effort and feel. It might be worth running the a-arms extended. This also would affect the offset wheels which you'd run. I did custom wheels and custom tie-rods. It was worth the extra effort. Lindsey made my Fuchs and I could order them however I wanted, so some extra fabrication on the tie rods wasn't a big deal.

I'd take a close look at what is optimal, given how much adjustment you have. I'm thinking +30mm from stock might be in the ballpark. I believe plenty of the guys with 935 - style a-arms will know how to optimize.

With the lengthened arms, having enough negative camber is easy, even without the camber boxes. I did use the offset monoball strut mount offered by Tarrett.

Made some more progress today...

Finished the passenger side strut install. Threaded the tie rod ends and visually aligned the struts. So far so good.

Then i greased the wheel bearings:

Bolted on the wheels, and out she came!! First time it has rolled on it's own wheels in 15 months...

Well, took the 930 to 9Elf Motorsports in Santa Rosa last weekend. Roll cage, rear fender removal and fiberglass fender mounting, fiberglass roof skin, and some other work to be done. Hopefully back in a few weeks.

Changing priorities and selling the project.

Search for my threads by screen name. Trying to sell the car as a roller with all the suspension, or as a tub (won't sell suspension parts until tub is sold first).

Thanks for the support and enthusiasm everybody. It's been a fun build, but it's just not the right time. This is only a temporary exit from the Porsche world.
