What all to buy for clutch job?
Looks like I have a clutch R&R in my near future. It has long been an ambition of mine to do this job myself - with the help of some far-flung friends on Pelican - and a few locals too. Wayne's book went a long way toward convincing me I can do this.
In the Pelican catalogue, I did not see a spring-centered clutch disc for an '87 G50. Isn't the spring-centered much better than rubber? Please give me a list of things to put on my birthday wish-list. I'm sure my mom knows just what a Sachs clutch kit is and will run right out and get me one. I assume I need a G50 clutch kit, fork upgrade kit, flywheel seal and some other engine/oil seals I'll be replacing "while I'm in there." I don't want to make this any larger a project than I have to. But I want to know what all I need to have on hand to do this job once. I'll be borrowing tools locally. Also, a local wrench tried to talk me out of doing the fork upgrade drilling job myself. Is this just an impossible feat for a DIY? Thanks.

Here's a list of what I just had to purchase to do the clutch update/replace on my '87 g50 (as well as the top end). I used the automotion type update. The clutch plate is a spring centered from a '77 Turbo. Call up Pelicanparts, they'll get you the right stuff.
For the clutch shaft update used the automotion type. No machining involved. Ring gear, cam oil lines and brackets were also updated. A few other items were replaced while I was in there... If you'd like more info let me know.

I know it's irrelevant in the context of your later model, but if you're ever doing this on an MFI car, replace the belt whilst you're in there. Ask me how I know...

While the engine's out you might consider resealing your intake manifolds.

the t/o bearing now has a smaller ID, requiring an updated guide sleeve. the rubber hub is actually the better deal for street use. less chance of chatter, and the hub, being much larger than the old SC type, is not prone to breaking up. even on turbos i've quit using the spring disc, unless otherwise requested, due to chatter problems. they don't all chatter, of course, but a few did and i don't need to redo any more jobs than i have to. order flywheel bolts and pressure plate bolts too, and inspect the starter ring gear, as they are thin and usually pretty worn out. there's an update on those too.
