This is a great thread.
Some tongue in cheek. Some baiting..... Some cerebral.... and some take it seriously...and that, is the funniest of all....;) |
I really love the early targas with stainless bar. Very nice.
I like Matt's car, nice color too. |

Couldn't be farther from the truth!I just returned yesterday from an 800 mile round-trip to Florida and back. It poured rain the entire way there and the only moisture I got IN the car was a bit coming in over the top of the passenger-side window. It was gorgeous yesterday on the return and the top was off for the entire trip--on the interstate at 80+. I had the heater turned up and it was perfect. I am always amazed at how quiet this thing is at that speed with the top off! You can easily converse in normal tones and listen to the stereo if you choose. I chose to listen to the mechanical music behind me as my little car gobbled up the miles---I turned over 180k yesterday AND she got over 25 MPG to boot! Oh and Targas aren't ugly. |
I have had a number of coupes and love the look...I have also had two Targas and love the view from the left seat. I put over 40k delightful miles on my 1994 964 Targa and could not have been happier.
I am in the market for another Targa. Blue skies, Baby. |

Anyone calling me a pansy can kiss my Turbo-Look butt!! I happen to like all, but prefer the Cabrio. I do have a soft spot for the coupe with no tail, but just different flavors of the same great taste.

Turbo Look? Please some ad douche idea.....the look w/o the balls....
At least my ride burns rubber coming out a turn and doesn't kill me when the boost kicks in..... |
ahem... yes, the better look, the brembo brakes, the turbo suspension, the 16x8/16x9's in the rear, the collectability, less propensity for oversteer, oh yes, and I can drive it daily without the trouble of the turbo rebuild every 30k miles.... seems like the best of both worlds to me...I've had cars that 'burn rubber'...who buys 911's to burn rubber anyways?
Douche? I think Touche. |
Hi
My 2 cents
I have owned all three, coupe, targa, cab.... To me you must also add into the discussion, what years. For example Porsche stop building the targa.....when 1998? early targa's are not respected in the long hood community, the Europeans like the targa, US long hood in coupe form bring more money. The cab just did not look good to me from 1983 to 2001, the cab in up position looks like a after thought, the cab down has the big boot, it looks dumb. Porsche finally got the cab to look good later....so now it great, so is coupe and no targa. I like the body integrity of the coupe and there is no cost, having a targa or cab top.. Foot-wells smaller on targa...... Long hood. Coupes Mid years coupes Late models. Cabs |
The Targa I now own is my first Porsche.
I have driven Coupes but no Cabs. If I had to do it all over again I would buy another Targa without question. Yes, it leaks but that's mainly my fault for not making the proper adjustments. And yes, there is some wind noise. With all that being said; there is nothing like driving along the coast or through the mountains roads with the top off, regardless of temperature. |
When I used to live in Germany I only drove coupes. When you go for long stretches at 100 to 150 MPH on the Autobahn the wind noise of a cab (don't know about Targa) is un-bearable. Here in the US (in Virginia) I bought a '86 cab. Mine doesn't leak in the rain, the heater works well to keep me warm in the winter, the wind noise up to 80 MPH with the top closed is kind of OK and there is nothing better than dropping the top when it's warm and listen to the engine behind you.

I bought a Targa because at the time it was the cheapest and best 911 I could afford. I really did not want a Targa, but then I went for a drive with the top off and started to like it more. The concept and deign is really interesting and gives the car much more character. There are people who prefer Targas and I think one day they will be valued more than coupes. One day nearly all 911s will live in garages and Targa populations are in decline because many have been let go too far beyond economical repair, and are common to be parted out.
Mine leaks a bit sometimes and creaks when cold, but it is an old car. The rest of my interior is like a bank vault. I don't think I would ever buy another targa unless it was an early one with stainless bar and all the chrome, those arguably look better than coupes I think. Plus $$$$ Owning a properly made convertible with a heated glass rear window, good insulation, and lack of wind noise makes me really not appreciate the hack job the 911 convertible is. Just my opinion, they still look beautiful with the top down. |
