You don't need to use the clutch if you match speeds! Cute video and kid.

Hi all,

It has been a while since I posted so I thought an update was in order. This will be a public service announcement (don't do what I did kind of post ;)) So in early December I moved back to the Denver area and thought it would be a good idea to put an oil in the Rat that could handle winter temperatures. I put in Mobil 1 0W40 Synthetic and was quite pleased as to how easily the car started on cold mornings. Shortly thereafter I began to notice massive streaks of oil that the car was leaving behind on the pavement. Previously the oil leaks had been quite minor for a 911. The leaks with the new oil were so bad that I was losing about a 2 quarts to and from work (a distance of 18 miles round trip):( I of course was really freaked out that I had a major seal fail. Instead of pulling the motor out I put 20W50 Pennzoil conventional back in and the oil leaks stopped immediately.:D Currently I am not driving the Rat in temps below 30F. If I am feeling brave in the future I might switch to a 10W40 conventional in the winter and report back if the oil stays in the motor.

Wow, from 2 qts a day to almost no leaks? Amazing.

Yea, I tried Mobil 1 in my 911 and it leaked! But just enough to make a mess of my exhaust. Not sure what I will use in my new motor once it is broken in.

I tried 0-40 in my Daughter's PT and was not happy with it. The lifters made noise? Switched back to 10-30 and all is good.

Not sure what motor would like the 0-40.

...not to start an oil debate, but, I have had great success using joe gibbs syn and conventional oils for ALL porsche models w/o any issues... i.e. valve noise, leaks, ect... jmho...

What a fantastic thread. I want to drop my engine and get after all that immediately. I have to replace my sound deadener, have to pull the motor to do that; reason enough for me.

Thanks! You don't need to pull the motor to replace the sound proofing mat. I did it with the motor in place. Just my own bias but I suggest you drive the car and don't worry about dropping the motor until you really need to drop it. Since you have a fresh tune up and everything is running fine I would simply drive the hell out of it. ;) When you need to drop the motor I will be happy to help you out.

Finally got around to installing the new transmission mount bushing from Pelican. It took a total of about an hour and makes a huge difference in the way the car shifts! I wound up wasting two drill bits because one broke off but overall a quite successful project :)

Here is a link to the write up I used

I stick to 15w40. always!

good to see that the rat is still with you!

kkinzli 05-30-2017 02:28 PM

Just a quick Rat update. I finally got around to doing a much needed tune up. I have been putting this off for almost 2 years now and just lived with the Rat running poorly. The Rat got new wires, plugs, points, rotor, and cap and is running better than ever. Was able to take a quick drive up Clear Creek Canyon before work today :D

Kristoph, I think it's great for you to speak German to your kids. I did (and still do) the same with mine (they are 20 and 21 now). Even though they don't like to speak German that much, they never forgot. Keep it up.

BTW, the shifting will get better the older they get. Both of my girls had to learn to drive a stick shift before I let them drive an automatic. And yes, they can drive my 911.

Glad you enjoyed the read Flojo! I am driving it to work everyday here in Colorado. The weather has been amazing and will drive until the weather gets too cold for the 20w50.

Servus Juergen! Glad to hear of another family that had the same approach. Our boys (now 4) Torsten and Wolfi are fluent in German and Hungarian. They start preschool on Monday to start learning English although they already understand some English. My wife recently asked me where something was in English and Torsten replied "It iz oooovver zer" I really love your approach with teaching your girls to drive. My only two rules are going to be they have to buy their first car themselves and it needs to be a manual.

Hi all!

Just thought I would provide an update on the Rat. The Rat has awakened from winter slumber and it is cruising the roads around Denver. Since moving back to Colorado the Rat has been flawless. All except for the 0W40 oil change disaster ;-)
