Peter and I managed to get the engine reinstalled with everything connected in record time on Sunday! It only took us 2 hours from start to finish to get everything set up. I ended up having to cut about 1/2 in off the the pedal side of the new clutch cable and about 1/4 in off of the transmission side to clear the oil tube after the adjustment was set. The cable I ordered from our host (Gemo cable) was almost 3/4 in longer than the old cable that was in the car. Has anybody else had a similar problem? I wonder if the Porsche replacement cable ($50) is the correct length? The Gemo cable ($12) is certainly a steal and didn't mind saving $38 by using my cutoff wheel a little ;-)

My next project will be to replace the transmission mounts. This has historically been difficult for the 901 transmission as the mounts are part of a solid bar assembly. I recently stumbled across this technical post and am going to try it. The two part bushings that mount into the bar are available from our host.

Really great post and documentation of the 'Rat's' rebuild. From the first few photos of it, you can tell that this is where Porsches are supposed to be found! :) If you're looking for any final touches for the Rat, check out our newly redesigned Accessories section! I hope you find some good things for your current and future DIY projects.

Finally set out to replace the horrible passenger seat. It has been held together with black duct tape since I bought the car. Luckily I was able to find the seat below right here on Pelican. I should be getting it in a week or so. I believe it should be a direct fit since it got pulled out of a 1970 911.

Also, I have decided to hold off on replacing the transmission mounts until I have all three of our cars together in one place. This should be in December sometime. If something unexpected comes up during the replacement of the mounts I would be out my daily driver

Hi all,
I figured that while I am replacing transmission mounts I might as well replace the shocks and struts. I was hoping to get some advice from the forum as to what shocks and struts are best to use. The current set up is KYB all around and they are quite harsh. I have no idea how long they have been on the car but could certainly be decades. I have used Bilsteins for several cars and have been quite happy with them. I am hoping to do this without breaking the bank so I have been considering using the cheaper Boge strut inserts and possibly the rear shocks as well but they appear to be currently unavailable. In terms of the rear shocks for my car it looks like the only ones Pelican carries are these Shock Absorber Bilstein Heavy Duty Rear 24001670 - Bilstein B6 - 24-001670 | Pelican Parts Here is a link to the Boge rear shocks that are currently unavailable Porsche Parts Boge Rear Shock Absorber, 911/912 (65-71) For the front strut housing I have the upgraded wedge pin type Boge struts. Can somebody remind me of the model year this switch took place? I can't remember if it was 72 or 74. I know that you can get Bilstein inserts that fit the Boge strut. I am interested to hear what people have to say about the two struts I have linked below: Strut Insert Bilstein Heavy Duty Front 34001127 - Bilstein B6 - 34-001127 | Pelican Parts Front Gas Boge/Sachs Shock Absorber 91134191304 - Sachs - Porsche - 911-341-913-04 | Pelican Parts Thank you in advance for all of the advice:D |
I was also planning on installing these when I do the front struts

Kristoph,
My pecking order for dampers: #1 You can't go wrong with Bilstein, but pricey. #2 Boge is a good compromise for the money, and work well. #3 Koni's are OK, more hype than function. #4 KYB's are utter crap, only an option for desperate grad students. DG |
The adjustability of Konis is nice. The yellow sport Konis are the way to go. Too bad the rears are NLA.
Bilsteins are great and add firmness due to the gas pressure. Check this add. Bilstein Shock/Strut - Rear 24001670- ReadReviews onBilstein #24001670 or this |

As always, thanks for the advice. Does this mean that the Rat was previously owned by a different starving grad student since it has KYBs? I will see what I can do about getting the Bilsteins. If that is not financially feasible I will go with the Boge/Sachs. |

The Rat goes on the Uhaul trailer in less then a week. Colorado here we come!!

Have a safe trip and enjoy your new home! It's below freezing but bright and sunny here in Stuttgart today... quite a change from Tampa!
|
Thanks Jeremy! Have been loving the pictures of Stuttgart. Made it to Mobile on the first day. Aiming for Wichita tomorrow.

Made it to Denver and moved into the new house. The Rat is happily enjoying a brand new 4500 psi garage floor painted with epoxy coating. The Rat is not enjoy starting in the below zero weather but drives fine once warmed up. Any suggestions on running different oil in Colorado? Should I still be running my 20w50?

Here are a few pictures from the move.

Also the days of doing everything barefoot are over. Here are a few pictures of our new reality.

Boy is that picture painful. I pulled my 911 behind that big UHaul also. Oregon-Florida-Oregon-Florida and finally back to Oregon for the last time over a period of 15 years.

Deja vu. I hope I don't have to do this again any time soon.
Good to see you are settled in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1482086822.jpg |
