Death from Aircraft Strippers?

This looks alarming:

Methylene Chloride Related Deaths Linked To Bathtub Refinishing

I have seen advice on using aircraft stripper on this forum. Time to reevaluate?

same goes for MEK, which is often recommended for removing engine case & cam housing sealant. NASTY stuff.

We used to use MEK in the factory to produce glue for bonding styrene panels.

Garage
Bathtub refinishing. Probably older homes with small bathrooms. Bad combo with any toxic vapor.

As a professional chemist, I will tell you this:

Dichloromethane (DCM, methylene chloride) is an awesome paint remover. Taking the paint off of my fake Fuchs was so easy using the stuff (in Aircraft Stripper, juiced with my own blend of DCM, methanol and ethyl acetate), but I would never dream of doing it in a bathroom. Not only that, but DCM vapors are heavier than air. So, you're working with your head in a tub, and the vapors fill the tub, and you have your head in there taking off the paint in the tub...

DCM works the same way chloroform works, as far as your central nervous system. So, you faint in the tub from too many fumes, and end up head down in the tub, where the DCM vapors have displaced the air - boom, you're dead.

If you're gonna use the stuff as a stripper, work outside. Use thick neoprene gloves because the stuff is absorbed through the skin, and is hard on your liver. Don't put any down the plumbing, if for no other reason than it will melt ABS, making your plumbing leak.

BTW, the fake Fuchs are coming along pretty nicely. I like the look of the cast centers and machined lips in raw aluminum. Nice contrast. Pics will follow when I'm done.

I meant to include that I think Aircraft Stripper is awesome - as long as you take precautions to protect your skin and lungs.

I guess if there was a stripper onboard an aircraft, and she applied her trade while in-flight, it could cause death (ie: crash the plane) due to the "distraction" created?!

This is the annoying thing with this hobby, everything is hazardous to our health.
When I am working on my projects, I always have my face mask / respirator on, everybody thinks i'm nuts. I also have a pressure fed face mask for when I am spraying my paints or dealing with vapours and I am still worried that it may not be enough.

I had no idea aircraft stripper was that powerful.
