brake lights work.....sorta

I know a lot of people have posted about brake lights suddenly failing on their 911....but I'm having a slightly different issue. My brake lights function fine when I press VERY hard on the brake pedal; for most around-town driving with light- to medium-pressure on the brake pedal, I get no brake lights.

Could this also be the brake light pressure switch? if so can someone enlighten me on how to verify this and how to repair ? Or is there some other culprit? This only just started happening a couple of days ago, nothing unusual led up to it failing. Mine is an '84 cab with a 993 rebody that put a tail and a 3rd brake light in place.

Thanks;

-Kevin

It sounds like your brake light switches are getting worn. They are located on the master cylinder in the front trunk. There are several threads on how to replace them without having to bleed the brake system.

At the very least, I would check the action of the brake pedel itself at the MC to get an idea of how they work.

Brake lights.

I agree with Oh Haha.

Did ours a while back.

It is a redundant system with two switches.

When the first one fails, the other is just about gone.

You will need an offset wrench to pull the one closest to the windscreen.

But first, verify the circuit by hooking up a multimeter to the harness.

pm me as needed.

Good luck,

Gerry

Ditto to the above. My '84 coupe was the same. I bought a pair of new switches, but since the circuit runs in parallel, and the one closest to the windshield is so hard to get to, I only replaced the easy one. That has taken care of my problem for now. I plan to convert my car to an adjustable mechanical switch later this year to eliminate this problem.
