Gooding & Co, RM, and Concours d' Elegance

Hey guys. So I only live an hour and half south of Amelia in St Augustine, but I decided to make a weekend stay out of it at the Omni Hotel (instead of driving back and forth like I do every year). Plus, with both auctions, Gooding & Co and RM, and the Concours, it just makes for an epic weekend of everything car...or Porsche to be exact!!

Anyways, after showing up a little bit late to the Gooding & Co Auction, I started looking around for the Drendel Collection. They had some amazing Porsches rolling across the block. They had a 917/30, 935/76, Turbo RSR, 934, a few 944s, and two 962s. While I was walking around was humbled to get to speak with Derek Bell for a moment about his 962 experiences, Ron from Jerry Woods Racing who helped rebuild the 917/30, and a little chat with our host here, Wayne Dempsey. All in all it has been an amazing day so far after starting off not so nice.

So here I am sitting at the Omni, getting ready to go eat some dinner and uploading all the photos I took....so while they upload to my computer, Im going to eat some dinner and I will be back in a little while to post everything up.

Did anyone else attend the Gooding & Co Auction today? Anyone attending the RM Auction tomorrow at the Ritz? If you are thinking about it, you should go. Its always an amazing time. Be back shortly with all the photos.

Chris

Ok, so dinner took a little longer than expected. Anyways, here are the photos. These are all just raw photos, compressed down to fit online. When I have some time I will go back and edit some of them. For some reason my white balance was off on a couple. The 934 came out really washed out. Ohh well, enjoy.

Thanks for posting the info and the photos. Look forward to seeing the rest of the results. Comparing hammer prices to estimates, I'd say that they were pretty close. Hope all the cars are finding good homes.

As for the 917/30, funny (but kinda sad in a way) story:

Matt Drendel had it restored by Jerry Woods after he bought it (motor was completely rebuilt), took it to VIR, did one lap and on the back straight got on full boost, lifting the front off the ground. Apparently Matt got so freaked, he immediately shut the car down, and never drove it at speed again

Sooo, Seinfeld just got a brand new 917/30. Would be great for fans to see it run like it was meant to at RR5 and other events....

It was weird, the Drendel collection all went on the high side of estimates, if not exceeding them. The rest (barring a few cars) didnt seem to get much attention. Wayne was right when he told me it was a "grab-bag" auction. And I dont mean that in a bad way because the auction was great. But all of the Drendel cars were very rare sought after race-cars. Personal opinion, but guys that generally buy old race cars, arent the same ones that buy Packards, Stutz, Cords, etc.

I am excited about the Ferrari 250 GTO today though. This car should bring a lot of money. Getting ready to head over to the Auction right now. Ill be back later with some more photos this evening.

In your first photo, the blue 906, #33, was (and still may be, if it didn't sell) Seinfeld's. It's the ex-Otto Zipper car, driven by Scooter Patrick. Just found an original press kit for it, circa-1967.

The RM auction just finished. Had a lot more classics there than at the Gooding & Co where it was race car central. Some really nice ones, some okay ones, and some that were just plain weird. There were a lot of 356s there, probably 10 or so as well.

Overall, had more fun looking at the Gooding & Co auction, but the RM was a little more "up scale." But there were a lot of nice people as well... and the last 934 built which will be auctioned off at the Monaco event in May.

Ill post some photos after dinner this evening.

Amazing - will check out website to see the prices that these gems went for... Something tells me it wouldn't have made any difference if I would've finally cracked open my old piggy bank as these cars are in the stratosphere. Anybody know if they had reserves, or if true Porschephiles were in attendance?

They broke all of the records.

The orange 934 sold for $810,000.
