Secret compartments could get drivers busted | The Columbus Dispatch

A proposed state law, advocated by Gov. John Kasich, would make it a fourth-degree felony to own a vehicle equipped with secret compartments. A conviction would mean up to 18 months in jail and a potential $5,000 fine.

The proposed law states "special hidden compartments". Something engineered from the factory couldn't possibly meet that definition.

I dunno Greg....

Quote:
A draft of the law describes a hidden compartment as a “space, box, or other closed container” that is added, modified or attached to an existing vehicle.
ital. mine

Pulling the AC might be "modifying"? Just posted it FWIW...

A way for druggies to make things difficult for the rest of us.

I wonder what they are going to do with all those teens having sub-woofer boxes in their honda civics. That would technically be an enclosed box that has been added.

Makes you wonder if this is kinda boarder line against constitutional rights and freedoms as a citizen.

I think it would be pretty easy to demonstrate that the smuggler's box is a factory installed item. I understand where you are coming from, but I think when they say modified, they are talking about when you modify a compartment in the car to hide something.

Hence why I am a chemist and wasn't an english major in college. I usually try and stay grammatically correct, but sometimes the texting slang takes over.

I just have to be sure not to call it a "smuggler's box" if I get pulled over...

As long as it is drug free...I think no worries. But it did occur to me as well when I heard about the proposed law.

That's what I would have thought also...but:

A hidden compartment in your vehicle, with or without drugs, could mean big trouble as Ohio officials get serious about slowing down drug-smuggling.

I don't think the smuggler's box is a hidden compartment, there is a clearly visible door. The trunk isn't a hidden compartment. They are after modified areas with hidden access IMHO.

Should this be in Off Topic? The 'smugglers box' is in plain site and is part of the car originally. Would you consider the glove box a hidden compartment? ....I also think there might be a little constitutional issue...something about right to privacy...but thats an OT topic as well I am sure the crazies on parf are all ready wetting themselves....

Meh, "texting slang" is the evolution of language. Baby Boomers resistant to change only last so long until...

I smuggle premium BC bud to the US in the gas tank, super easy with the fuel pump location on a Porsche.

Everything in the USA is illegal now these days anyways, for a country that promotes freedom you can't even have a secret compartment in your car. hmmm.

Pretty ridiculous if the proposed law as written would apply to OEM compartments or any compartment not created with the express intent to hide illegal drugs.

I already notified Batman, he is moving out of Ohio.
