Certificate of Authenticity question

I've heard mixed reviews on COAs. I went ahead with one. Porsche just called to say certain information was unavailable because it wasn't recorded when it left the factory. It was MSRP, production date, and option e 03. Any one know what the option e 03 might be?

I have a 72 911T which appears to have the S option trim.

This is exactly why a COA is not worth the $100+ it costs!!

I went through this recently with my car. Some records were not available for my '71 911T. Not entirely unexpected on things like MSRP with options. Specifically, the transmission type (mine is a 5-spd) and serial number along with MSRP were unavailable. Certain options do not seem correct either. It states my car came with chrome 5.5x15 wheels - in fact it had Mahle gas burners on it. And the wheel date codes are consistent with the date the car was built so I have a very hard time believing they were not OE to the car knowing the ownership history.

But it did verify the original engine serial number and a few other things like interior/exterior color, factory A/C (which I knew from the clues in the car itself), etc.

I have to say I was hoping for more out of the COA. Verification of 'S' trim/gauges which looks to be original to the car (proper dates on gauges, etc) would have been nice. And it should have verified that the trans type was a 5-spd in my opinion. I'm the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner had the car from 1975 until I bought it without doing any modifications. At 54k miles when I purchased it, the car is very original.

I had the original VIN sticker from the door jamb of the car which verified a production date and they were able to include that in the COA. Otherwise it would have stated 'information not available' for production date. I submitted photos which tied the VIN to the production date on the original sticker.

Buy the Red Book - it has lots of numbers-related detail you can show to people

- write up your own detaails display - or photoshop the COA and add in the extra info

COA is simply a nice thing to display at shows & events

- at least it proves your car is not a backyard clone or reclaimed salvage

Porsche has the info, but in some cases they no longer want to share it ( there was a time when CoA told who was the Selling Dealer). I think when PCNA moved from Reno to Atlanta, all thier Records got mixed up. Now 944 options Codes show up on 914's etc

Since the entire thing can easily be photoshopped or created by anyone with a computer, it proves nothing whatsoever.

What really bugs me is, they'll still charge you $110 even though the information is incomplete. In legal terms that's called "failure to perform", and courts across the land are brimming over with suits based on that. If even one item of info is missing, you should be charged NOTHING. Hell, I suppose if ALL the info is missing, they'll send you a blank sheet of paper and charge you $110.

I've bought 3 of these for 3 different cars and every single one of them contained errors or omissions. One of them was for a brand new 997 and it had errors on the option codes! Never, never again.

Got mine last year, light on info. It did confirm that it is a numbers matching VIN, motor and tranny, interior and exterior correct. No MSRP or build date. Listed only three options - Right side mirror, manual antenna with front loudspeaker and Dunlop tires. Thought I would have listed as door mounted speakers no in singular loudspeaker and maybe wheels.

The car has no sunroof and factory AC, manual windows and seats, and one rear seatbelt. Would those show up on the COA as ordered without?

Still nice to know the major components have traveled together all these years.

The 110.00 would sure come in handy now that I just recently dropped the motor and need a few bits and pieces.

I was satisfied with mine for my 1973 cis. It confirmed it was all original.
The only problem was what USPS did with their handling, creased and ripped. I called Porsche and they said no problem, send it back and they will send me a new one and refund the mailing costs.

When I spoke on the phone to PCNA, they told me that my '74 was a 911T (!) I decided I didn't need a COA to tell me that erroneous information, never mind that my car isn't authentic anyway.

By the way, they will give you all the information they have for free over the phone. You only pay $110 if you want the paper certificate. That was my experience, at least.

In any case, they got the paint code right.

Yep, 800-porsche to call Customer Care. You give them the VIN and they'll tell you everything in their database.
