A bit of an OT headscratcher here.
I was talking to a guy this last weekend who owns a Boxster and a Cayenne. He's a Porsche guy, and the cars are Porsches, but he kinda dropped a bomb on me by saying that there are Porsche guys who wouldn't consider him a real Porsche owner. I gave him sort of a blank stare, because I didn't know that there were flavors of Porsche fans, and that some Porsches or more Porsche than other Porsches. So, If I'm understanding him right, a 914 is not a real Porsche unless it's a 914-6. 924s, 928s and 944s are not real Porsches because the motor is in the wrong place and not cooled by the correct fluid. The Cayenne is a VW, just like the 914.
Am I getting all this about right? Hell, I'd rock a 944 turbo ever day and on Sunday - that would be a heck of a daily driver. And a Cayenne might be nice for hauling the family and the dog for a long driving vacation. What am I missing here? Having lurked in this forum for quite some time, I must admit that I have never seen this attitude here - is he pulling my leg here, or what? |

Like any marque, Porsche has enthusiasts that feel they are somehow above the fray because they own a certain model/year or park and polish or race and autocross etc. If the one you have makes you happy, that's all that counts.
Love the one you're with.

the cayenne is a large, heavy, comfortable SUV that most often has an automatic transmission and is driven by a soccer mom. some purists frown on it as a departure from the traditional Porsche ethos of small, light sports cars with antiquated manual transmissions and marginal HVAC systems, driven by men with lot of chest hair. but Porsche made a ton of money from it, which at the end of the day is their job. the boxster is more baffling, as it really is a sports car and at least half of them seem to have manual transmissions. the only purist knocks against it are that it is water cooled (like virtually every other car on the planet), and can't be driven on track events with some sponsors because it lacks a roof.

I love my 911s, but never had a lot of chest hair.
At 56 I could probably still count them if my eyes were better.

As the earlier poster said, "If the one you have makes you happy, that's all that counts." I believe that the vast majority of "Pelicans" would agree with that statement.

It is kinda like HD people that think they are the only real motorcycles. I have been riding motorcycles longer than some of them have been alive (47yrs) and HD's are 1920's technology, and compared to modern bikes clunkers. I have owned P cars for around 45 years, to think there are not other really nice cars is absurd. As we all know no other car feels, drives and handles like a 911 (esp. early ones), but to deny they can be a pain is not reality. They are like a bad girlfriend, you know they are not good for you, big trouble, expensive, but when it is good, man is it good. Tons of fun!

It is like this........I always blip my lights at at Porsche people..100 % of 911 Crowd nod back.
They are in tune.. Have had their hands dirty, Know why they own a 911 ...It is NOT for status quo.... The Newer Porsche drivers drive past..not having a clue. Going to the yacht club or gulf game .......They have a Porsche because.............its cool? I have talked to a few New owners..They are out of touch.... But..Lets be happy they bought them...there is a New Old Crowd coming...I hope

40 years of an obsession.
Not aligned with our thinking is a fairer term. However, so not aligned, that after speaking with them I shower with my clothes on and sob. |

You are overworking it. Full stop.
If I say "Some 356 freaks look down on your 85 911 because it is not pure", picture them driving around in the 356 coupe - two in the front and one guy wedged in the back - looking for 911 owners for to hurl insults. |

All that being said, I have over the years seen some self-segregation between the types. For instance, a few years back I attended a Boxster meet in Blowing Rock, NC, right tight up against the Blue Ridge Parkway. One son had a 997 and 2 brothers-in-law brought their Boxsters. I took our 911 and felt welcome, but still the 911's were the odd man out with that crowd, all nice folks I must add.
During the meet on one of the drives, we came upon a large 928 group at Grandfather Mountain. The reception for the Boxsters was downright frosty. I couldn't really grasp what the deal was, but it was a little uncomfortable. Maybe because we crashed their party. I dunno. It's there. |

I have been surprised many times when 911 enthusiasts say how they dislike the boxter. Curious to me, how one can be so into one model and so not into a model that shares so many details with the other.
As to the Cayenne, it has given the company a big boost and helps them to keep on making sports cars. So that is a good thing. Cheers Richard |

You're not as well-informed as you THINK you are, Mr. "I've been riding longer than all of you" HD is certainly not the best or even remotely the most technologically advanced motorcycle, but to say that they use 1920's technology is absolutely ill-informed. There is a difference between STYLING cues and technology, and to some people, including me--there is a certain simplicity and rawness to HD bikes that makes them the correct CHOICE. Oh, and BTW my 16 year old scoot doesn't leak oil and has never once left me on the side of the road. Starts every time and runs like a bat out of hell. No clunker here. just like our beloved little P-cars--their performance is based on their care and maintenance. It's all a matter of choice---not opinion. You're the guy the OP was talking about. The 928 was the first Porsche that was designed and built from the ground up within Porsche. Built in Zuffenhausen alongside the 911. It is therefore arguably more pure Porsche than a 911 is.

When I think Porsche, I think 911. Period.

The only real Porsche is an air-cooled 911.
Of course, the only real 911 is a pre-impact bumper car. And, we all know the only real early 911 is a short wheelbase car. And, certainly the only SWB worth owning is the first one built. Sadly, Jerry Seinfeld owns that one. Or a very good replica, if you believe the rumors.

I am a fan of all P-cars, I do know some people that insist on rear engine air cooled only worship.
