Okay, silly tech question:
On the driver side of the engine compartment and just below the coil is a gizmo that has a lever controlled by a wire cable. It doesn't seem to do much on my car. The lettering on it includes VDO and Geshwin_ _ _ _ _ _ and some other letters and numbers I can't see clearly.
What is it, what does it do, and does it require attention? Thx much. |

On my 84 Carrera the only wire controlled item on that side is the vacuum servo for the cruise control. It's back behind the coil then comes the fuel filter and further back in the far back left corner is the Cruise control servo, it has a wire within a black shell (like a bike brake cable) that then routes to the throttle linkage on the Throttle Body. That's the only wire controlled device on that side of my engine compartment.

Never seen that before? Does this thing have vacuum lines or fuel lines attached?
Not only that but it looks like someone may have cut the plastic fuse panel cover to fit that part in, almost like it's not a stock part? Tell us more about this engine setup, does it have any modifications? Especially fuel related stuff?

It's part # 944-617-121-00-OEM in the link I supplied. Cruise control servo.

Basic care is all it should need, keep the shaft clean maybe a tad of WD40 on the shaft and also keep cable clean and slightly oiled. Other than that, if the cruise works it should need little care.

So it's a VDO cruise control unit? That's interesting, my car does not currently have cruise control or the lever for it that should be on the right side of the steering wheel per my owners manual!
