Looking for a 1984 to 1986 911 owner in NYC for 915 comparison

Hello - I recently purchased an '84 Carrera Targa and am looking for another owner in the area. I am actually trying to understand my 915 transmission a bit more - and am looking for someone who is familiar with how the 915 "should" shift. Ideally we would try each other's car to see if the shifting is similar.

I live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn - so Brooklyn or Queens would be best.

Sorry West Coast Here,

But, the rule of thumb is:

Component:

915 Clutch must engage in the middle of pedal throw, if not you need to adjust it or you will never properly shift and possibly damage the trans, you do not want to do this, it is quite expensive.

Shifter:

Never, ever force into gears EVER! Never pop out of gear, This happens when you shift out of gear without fully depressing the clutch, even though you think you depressed it all the way, but in fact you did not. So always practice full clutch depression prior to shifting. Shift should always plop/drop into gear without grinding or nipping the gear.. You will feel a little resistance which is normal.

Shifting/Clutch Play:

When cold and sitting, depress the clutch and start her, this puts less stress on the starter.

Drive off immediately, our babies do not require a warm up, release clutch slowly to feel for engagement, DO NOT THROTTLE until you feel it catch. Drive off and when you shift, depress completely, then slowly shift to the next gear. Down shifting is basically the same way, clutch in all the way then down shift.

As you come to a stop, you have choice of two methods, coast in neutral and stop or down shift forcing the RPMs to drop and then right before stop and low RPMs plop into 1st, then immediate clutch in to stop. The train of thought here is what is cheaper? Clutch or Brake Pads/Rotors?? You will probably end up doing a bit of both.

Speed/RPM match, here takes a bit more practice but you will save your clutch wear. This is basically, blipping the throttle while the clutch is in middle of a shift so the clash of the fly wheel and clutch is not so abrupt. Up & Down shift is the same method, at SPEED, CLUTCH IN=Off Gas, in Middle of Shifting, Blip the Gas to bring up the RPMs, Release Clutch. the RPMs will be pretty close.

Needless to say, NEVER EVER POP THE CLUTCH TO DO A BURN OUT, We are not designed for that

Sorry if this is a bit confusing but others more experienced will chime in or better yet correct me.

Enjoy your new Baby.

Jim

Does anybody still do double clutching when down shifting? At higher RPM's I find it a very smooth and quick way to change into lower gear, especially from 3rd to 2nd gear with my 915 transmission.

My 915 is great. It also is rebuilt, new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, and has the seine system shifter with new bushings.

Mine is great as well. I need to spend some time adjusting the shift coupling - but after a transmission rebuilt it shifts extremely well.

I had no idea when I bought the car what to expect - and was told by a few "experts" that the 915 just does not shift well. Totally not true if the transmission is in good shape and the shift coupling is well adjusted.

Also found that changing out the helper spring on the clutch made the experience a lot better. At first I thought I needed super hero calves to engage the clutch.
