Vibrating steering wheel. A process of elimination....
Hi
I've had new tyres fitted and the wheels a balanced twice. Yet, at 110kph the steering wheel vibrates..... Then I replaced the bearings. No change. Played with tyre pressures. No change What should I look for next? |

Shocks and/or bushings. If they have more than 100,000 miles on them it's time.

Okay sure. New shocks, bushes, tie rods etc. all done.
Wheel alignment done professionally. Any other thoughts |

Alignments should always accompany wheel balancing in my opinion.

hmmm, Try another tyre shop, possibly a custom shop. I had a chain balance my tires and I'd get horrible vibrations, went to a custom shop and they balanced it with a bunch of weights but did note my rims were bent.It improved but had the rims straightened and wow what a difference. They straightened it out so well it did not require weights
![]() Since all your components are new and slop free (right?) focus on the tyres and rims. Also, how is the two U joints on the steering column?

What wheels do you have? I had a 914 long ago that had a vibrating steering wheel like you describe and I, too, replaced and did everything you mentioned . . . it turned out that the cheap, Empi style wheels were not truely round!

How old are your tires? I had a steel belt broken in older Desert Dueler tires (or are they tyres?) on my Landcruiser once. It caused the same vibrations that you described. Eventually the tire exploded. Fortunately it was on a rear wheel. But it did tear up the body around the wheel well! Otherwise I came out OK.

You have a 1965 912 with a 3.2 motor in it and turbo "springs" to offset the added weight of the larger engine per your garage info.
Did the front end work ok with this configuration before? |

Thanks gents. Tyres are new. Bearings are new. U joints appear good - how do I check?
Girl doesn't need a vibrator thanks joe! Might swap the wheels with the rear... Last edited by rolls 912; 03-10-2012 at 02:29 AM.. |

If'n ya pull one sparky on that four banger, all problems are gone....
![]() BTW, since the wheels are the same size.....nice to be able to swap them.....have you ever done a spin balance with the tires on the car? Old school tire/alignment shops used to do that.
