bewildered?

Hi Everyone, I am a newbie here. I have spied on all the forums here searching for the answer to my question. I know it is in here, but I just can't locate it.

I have a 1977 911 with the 2.7 + the CIS. I know that this year really isn't worth much and not much of a collector. However I got a pretty good deal on it. I it know the 2.7 has had it troubles. Mine has a what I believe is a broken ring, for it blows oil like crazy. I don't really want to spend the money on rebuilding this engine, when I can get a better engine with better reliability. I want to get a 3.2 for a replacement. My question here is what do I need to swap this with the 2.7 parts? Can I use the existing CIS or would I have to switch it to the Motronix? What parts would be interchangeable with this exchange?

I have saw a few 3.2's on ebay, some sound good, others a little suspect. I know from here, my brother and cousin, that Motormeister is a bad choice. I have seen some others that maybe you guys may have heard of. One is Florida- dismantler also la-dismantler. Do you know anything about them?

I will respectfully sit back and hopefully read your thoughts. Thank you all so much in advance.

John

Oil tank is checked when running, hot and on level ground.....it could be a simple as an overfill.

John,
First, WELCOME to the Forum
You will find a lot of help here.

Joe Bob has the right idea: do some diagnosis first.
Oil overfill is common and easily diagnosed and rectified.
If you suspect a mechanical problem, a cylinder leak test and cranking compression test will give you the information to make an informed decision.
There is more.

That is not to say sourcing a 3.2 should be ignored.
Buying engines long-distance is fraught with risk.
A guarantee and the reputation to make it good are necessary.

An additional protection may be have the engine shipped to an independent shop with an engine dyno.
You can have them run it and report the condition and diagnose any issues.
This adds a bit to the cost but you get an independent assessment and a well-tuned engine.
This also lets you return something misrepresented or a prior MM ‘box-of-junk’.

What is the condition of the rest of the car?
How is the body (rust & prior crash repair)?
Does it drive and ride properly?
Transmission OK?
Is the interior, paint, glass, trim and general service condition acceptable?
What are the flaws?

You should assess all these questions before you spend a dime.

If considering a 3.0 or 3.2, keep in mind you will need a front oil cooler system.
A CIS 3.0 is almost ‘bolt-in’.
The 3.2 DME will come with the electronics and wiring harness.

Again, welcome.

Best,
Grady

You know Joe Bob, I will double check that for sure. I will get back to you on that. That was what I was told when I purchased it; a broken ring that is. Hmm? Thank you!

Grady, that was what I was wondering. I have heard of a lot of bad results about buying from the"unkown." I see a lot of nice looking engines, but where I live it is almost imposible to go check it out; so reputation is huge here. I know on the Peliccan Page there is a lot of knowledgable and honest people who know. It's great! The closest shop to me is in Seattle, which is about 12 hrs from here.

As far as the shape of it. It really needs nothing that I know of. The interior is really nice shape. No rust, just a few little knicks in the paint that be can fixed. The glass is good. Seats are great. It has the Fuchs wheels with nice tread left. It has a whale tale, but I might get a regular deck lid for it in the future. I will get some pics and post a couple if you want. I am really chomping at the bit. I need to relax though and not make any rash decisions.

In case of wrong oil level, for which I will check right a way. Here is what I had read about what I need to get to replace it with the 3.2, but not really sure; for I have a whole engine sitting and waiting to be droped.

DME brain and harness, DME relay and barometric senor, tachometer(?), fuel pump and assembly(?),and fuel line from the tank thru tunnel all the way to the engine bay(?).

The question marks are for whay can't I use my existing parts?

Anyway I thank you both for getting back to me so fast. I am really lost and any direction in the right way is greatly appreciated.

Oh and Grady, you need to set up a paypal account for you Answer Price list there..
