Angry Mechanic Panic...DALLAS, TX...

If your from Dallas.....let me hear from ya....

Any of you guys got any experience with Autoscope out of Dallas. They've got a shop in Plano and one about a .5 mile from me here on the east side. I got out of work a few hours early today and decided to pop in there and ask the guys a few questions... I've had my car at ZIMM's for some carb work... I've also had it over at a company called 911 Enterprises... I dropped about 4G's at 911 Ent.. Getting all kinds of stuff done... Was real happy with their work.

Back to Autoscope...

Maybe I should run from this "seasoned" Porsche mechanic....don't laugh too hard...

The first man... jumps in my car and immediately looks to the right side of the dash board for the ignition.... I give him about 10 seconds and ask him if he has ever driven one of these before... Suddenly.... the "seasoned" 911 in house expert comes out.... jumps in compliments me on the color... fires up the car... and proceeds to tell me that my oil pressure light is flashing... I give him about 10 seconds thinking he is talking about my oil level gauge... it flat lines unless you thump it with a finger....then jumps up to "somewhat" normal levels... After about 30 seconds I have to tell this guy that the parking brake is on.... GOD ALMIGHTY.....

I've mentioned in previous posts that I had a potential shock or CV problem.... turns out that after bouncing the rear of my car up and down a few times.... I've got a busted KONI.... This guy is knowledgable.... but I wasn't really sold... He even had the audacity to take some shots at ZIMMS... regarding engine rebuilding etc...

OK... should I just avoid this all together.... or what??? I know we're talking about 30 somethin' years worth of 911's... and not everybody sees a '72 model everyday....

I'm lookin' for a response from somebody around here that has had some work done by this company... any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks..

Jon D.

I have not worked with those guys. When I lived in Dallas, I took my 911 to Inovative Autoworks. They are just off of Central in Plano. Kind of tricky to find but they are very honest. I don't remember the mechanics name, but he looked exactly like Sam Elliot.

Give Ed Mayo a call on Monday (817-540-4939).

I have never done anything at Autoscope, but my recommendation will be RUN

Cool Wait...here comes the good part...

I knew everyone would say run.... I should have not even walked in the door... The place just caught my eye... because they've had a "yellow" 914 up there for several weeks.....poor bastard got screwed... and there are always several Benz, Jags, etc ... up there... Turns out I showed up this afternoon and the guy at the desk says.... yeah we got a Porch (redneck pronouncitation) up here now... it's a 9 somethin' or udder... I ask him is it a 914-6....he says.... "huh"... RUN...FOREST...RUN...

Back to the ZIMM'S slam.... this dude says a "real" 911 rebuild up to his specs. would run about $20K.... I laughed beligerently and said "YOU'RE SMOKIN' CRACK BUDDY"..... How on this planet could somone manage to take a "bastardized" car like mine a '72T with a '70T engine and 901 tranny and tell me that an engine rebuild up to "spec" would run 20K....

At least he thought my car was nice.... I think he thought I was a chump livin' in da hood....with some extra cash to burn....

Run! Run away fast!! Never had any work done by them but I stopped at the dallas location once and asked about tracking down a possible vacuum leak. I was quoted $125 for some kind of smoke test + an hourly charge. Hey Jon, are you going to Jordi's next saturday?

OK. little panicky here myself. Dinged my alignment a little in our snow and have alignment scheduled sat. am at the Park Cities Autoscope. Anyone been there and have an opinion? I've seen their facilities (next to Jack Griffins stunning car condo project) and their are awesome. Just trying to make sure they can handle a simple alignment after reading this thread I'm a little nervous. Maybe the location I'm going to is good with Porsches? Main reason I'm going is it's extremely close to my house and I was under the impression they were a good shop.
Thanks

Wow, didn't realize that the original post was from 2003.

If you dinged the alignment, isn't there a good chance that you bent something? Just asking. I don't know anything about Autoscope though.

The only 'problem' with Mayo's is that they are sometimes sorta backed-up.

But if you can wait until they can get you in you will be glad you did.

And you never know.... you might catch them on a slow day.

Autoscope ! well a few years back they were changing the transmission in one of my Porsches, naturally they removed the engine to do so and plugged the oil lines in the process, so far so good right ? well they installed the tranny and the engine back and everything seemed perfect for a while but the oil pressure became an issue.....it so happened that they forgot to remove a plug from one of the oil lines ! needless to say the engine was completely ruined ! so yes run or even better fly as fast from them as you can !

Old thread....

Wow... that was a while back! Ran as fast as I could from Autoscope. They never touched the car.

The car has been to Mayo's on a couple of different occasions! Been to Zimm's once prior to that.

Nothing but great things to say about Ed and his crew over there. Getting in can take some time as mentioned above, work can take some time as well. It's all well worth the wait.

I called Autoscope here in East Dallas and they set an appointment for 8:00am.
the next morning. When I arrived they checked me in. For the next 3 days I drove by their shop and my car just set in the parking lot. I went up to the shop and asked what was going on with my car and they said they wanted $2,800.00 to balance my car. I said it took you three days to tell me that. They had not even looked at my car. I said no way... They said it would be $129.00 for the quote.

I said NOT... I disputed the charge and paid them nothing.

RUN RUN RUN away...

Question, If you were happy with the work that 911 Enterprises did, why are you taking your car to someone else.

Thumbs up Well.. Why someone else...

Man this thread is really....really... old....

DGMark

1. Are you aware of who Ed Mayo is?

2. Dusty and the boys at 911 Enterprises did a fine job with the work that needed to be done at the time.... I would recommend them to anyone as well.

3. At the time... 10 years ago... The shop (911 Enterprises) was closer to my home in far East Dallas than Zimms or Mayo Performance way the hell out in HEB.

4. I preferred to take my '72 911 to the man who has several of the finest, unmolested (unlike my car), pristine early 911's in the country.

Not complaining about any of these shops as I get older.. Just depends on the age of your vehicle and who you trust with it... OP referred to Autoscope in East Dallas.... You never see any 30 plus year old cars there anymore, not any Porsche's either. As a matter of fact you don't see ANY 35 - 40 plus year old Porsche's over here anymore.

Mine's kept under a heavily guarded garage and circles White Rock Lake about once a month...

I keep dragging this old 911 around with me...

Anybody wanna buy it??
