Four post lift engine drop

hello all, who has a four post lift that has dropped an engine without retrofitting the lift?

Thanks

Hi,
I can't say I've done it but am planning it for very near future. I have a Gemini
which I think is typical. The 'stock' lift does not have even close to enough room
between the rails to fit the 911 engine (with 914 engine sheet metal in my case.)

Like you I hope to hear from some experts, but my plan is to take the rail without
the hydraulics, unbolt the 2 bolts from each end, physically turn it around (to
effectively remove the inside protruding lip) and move it out as far as possible,
drilling new holes. This gives enough room with about 2" to spare.

I have.

No big deal, jack car from bed of lift, rest engine on lift, slide out the back.

engine drop

I moved one rail ( the one with out the cylinder) 2.5 inches to the side and re-drilled the rails.
Center the car on the hoist and just drop the engine onto a roll away work bench

There is also another method used by Ferrari people to drop the 348 engine. It involves "hanging the rear of the car way back over the end of the lift" Sounds unsafe, but actually quite safe.

have not tried it myself. I got so used to doing it on the floor that I would just do it that way.

I've done it many times, but all I can say is that it "depends on the lift".

Mine has a floating skid so I can set it wide enough that the tin ect clears no problem when lowering. I've seen others with notches in the placement, one to big one to small..

4 post lift

I have the smallest 4 post lift that Eagle Equipment makes (don't remember the exact model) and I have dropped the motor from my 70 911T (2.2L) with no clearance issues. I had a couple of inches to spare on each side. The motor was complete when I removed it- ie, with full exhaust. Hope this helps!

lift

John,
It is likely the equivalent to the GLO9000- but on the Eagle website, the GLO-9000 is blue, where as mine is black. I bought it back in 2005 and it was the same price as the GLO-9000. I would simply have a look at mine to get the info, but it is back in the USA and I am currently in Okinawa Japan (US Navy MD stationed here). Also- my motor also had all the engine tin still on when it was dropped- that's actually the widest part of the whole thing.

The lift is slow because it uses a hydraulic pump/piston system to drive a cable system to lift the car. It's not that big a deal to wait a minute or two while it's lifting. In fact the slow speed of it was a saving grace in several situations when I was lifting the car up pretty high and the roof of the car was near the ceiling. Had the lift been really fast, I'd likely have run the car roof into the ceiling and been paying for major dent damage repair on the car.

4 post for parking is great. 2 post or scissor for serious bottomside work...

Cheers

That's what I was going to ask, about how do you feel while waiting, base your experience.
Thanks.

car hitting the ceiling

"""I'd likely have run the car roof into the ceiling and been paying for major dent damage repair on the car.""""

I only have 114" ceiling height and if I am not careful I drive the upper car into the rafters.
To prevent this, I build a optical sensor system to cut out power to the lift, when the upper car is 1" from hitting the dry wall ceiling.

I see 2 poles lift, and I see some cracks on the concrete floor. I feel scared. What's everyone's thought?

I didn't use the lift to remove the engine (as my car came without one). However, here is a posting of how I installed the engine using a 4 post lift.

Engine Going in Tomorrow!

Easily do-able with a BendPak HD-9 lift and the rails moved to their outer-most position.
