1968 Sporto Questions (photo below)
I'm preparing a '68 911 Sporto for sale and my reg. Porsche guy doesn't do Sportmatics. I've heard there is someone around that does. Anyone know who that might be in case it needs something? I'm in SoCalif.
Also the engine lid has 3 holes under the 911 badge. I think the sportmatic badge is usually at the bottom of the lid, no? So what are these holes for? Thank you for your assistance Rick ![]() |

I guess the sporto badge was higher in the early years.
I'm hoping nothing is wrong with tranny but it has been sitting for a couple of years and I'm planning for the worst. BTW I'm told there were only 160 Targa Sportos made. Can anyone verify this or tell me how to get the number? My usual books don't break it out. Thank you again. |

Does the engine run?
If so, it should be pretty easy to diagnose a trans problem.

A little bit of Sporto info, including a photo of badge placement, can be found on page 55 of my buyers guide, The Used 911 Story, (8th Edition).

Car isn't running yet but it was "running when parked"
![]() Thanks Peter. I was planning on checking your book out on the lifecycle this morning while pedaling to nowhere. I took a quick look at page 55. I have a Sportmatic badge that came off a 70 Targa where they are near the bottom. It looks like the '68 is a smaller badge...do you happen to know if it in fact is a different size? |

That would be terrific. Didn't know I would get such personalized service when I bought your book.
My 1970 is 10 5/8 " long and approx 4" between pins. Thank you in advance Rick |

Rick, I'm sure the badge that I have was from a '68 car. It measures 10 3/8" long, the letters are 3/8" tall, and the three pins are 4 1/8" apart. It is gold. Hope this helps!

I measured mine more carefully and it looks like a match. I just need to find someone who can take me from the chrome/aluminum to gold in SoCal.
Thanks so much for your help. |

Nope. Mine doesn't advertise that it has a sporto in it.

No one would ever guess that to be a Sporto

Production numbers from sportomatic.org
Quote:
according to a spreadsheet posted on sportomatic.org (link) there were 464 US Sportos produced in 1968 - this number includes Targas and Coupes. 160 Targas would account for approx. one third of all '68 US produced. Sounds about right to me!

Keep in mind this 160 includes both 911 and 911L models. Somewhere I had a number that broke it down further that I seem to remember as a 2:1 ratio of L's to normals. So if your car is a 1968 911 SWT Sportomatic it is roughly one of around 50. It would also be the only one I've seen on the Internet besides mine.
