What does this connect to? (dash wiring)

Everything I know about electrical I learned when I was two after biting through an electrical cord that was plugged in. My hair still sticks up. Needless to say the trauma has caused me to avoid electrical projects ever since so my knowledge is limited at best. I removed my stereo head unit yesterday and covered the hole with the factory block off plate. It went really smooth but I noticed this hanging down under the dash. Does anyone know what it connects to? My first impression is that it was part of the original stereo wiring.

Looks a lot like the fresh air blower motor connector, but it's been a while since i looked at it.

cain 03-24-2012 10:29 AM

What color wires are attached to the connector?

Blue/white stripe, red/white stripe, blue, brown.

Looks like it connects to the firewall and goes to the fresh air blower. Does the other end connect to the in dash heater control panel?

That would be the fresh air blower that loves to smoke? Be sure the blower is off, plug it in, and be aware when you test it that the PO may have unplugged it for a reason.

Where would that be located? I have looked all over under the dash and cannot see anything that resembles the receiving end.

First follow the wires and make sure they are connected to the heater/fresh air control assembly. If they are, that is what we are talking about. if not it is something else.
Then look under the dash, but not in the direction of the dash. The location is on the firewall between the cab and the front trunk.

The wires from the blower assembly go to the other connector, but don't worry about that. The male connector is permanently mounted on the firewall from the trunk side and what you have in your hand, the female connector, permanently attaches to that.

It is basically a junction that allows the wires to pass without an open hole.
It can't be further away than the length of the wires.
In my car it is about 2" or 3 " above the ashtray height , but about 8" to 12" to the right.

Look under the dash, but forward.

You mean here?

That looks to be occupied.

This connecter branches off a that large bundle of wires that runs to the firewall. It's right under the ashtray and branches towards the drivers side. All my blower controls seem to work. I hear everything turning on and air blows. It's a mystery.

And, thanks for all your help everyone.

I give up! If everything works, maybe it is an old connector from some previous change out.
But yes the firewall you are pointing at is the right area.
I still say FOLLOW THE NON CONNECTER ENDS OF THE WIRES then you will know exactcly what the connector is for.

That certainly does not look like a stereo connector. Looking at the factory manual wiring diagrams that connector is for the "Inside Temperature Sensor Blower", Which according to the block is both a temperature sensor and a blower motor in one. This also fits with the description for the fuse you indicated.

Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for that. That is a great visual of the crazy HVAC system of mystery.

I have been all over under the dash and cannot for the life of me find anything that looks to be the receiving end for this plug. The area you described sounds like this...

That's already occupied as well....I gave up looking and installed some RSA Door panels and rear seat delete carpets today. Haha.

My car will be in the shop soon for some suspension upgrades. I'll bug my mechanic about it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Here's what I think.

Your recent picture says it all........

Your two wire connection to the cabin temp sensor confirms that you do not have Auto Heat.

Therefore, the connector in question, according to the color code,
is a factory pre-wired Auto Heat connector which is not in use.

That makes sense. I was beginning to think by the looks of connection points on the plug that it was never plugged into anything. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Cheers.
