Another dash mounted stopwatch project
I won a couple to Heuer stopwatches on ebay and just finished my mounting set-up for my 1970 T . I first removed the center dashtrim and sealed the radio opening with scrap metal. I then covered the entire panel with scrap basket-weave vinyl (available from our host) donated by a fellow pelican. Next, I cut holes for the vent control unit and two small holes for my mounting hardware.
This set-up uses stopwatch mounting clips made for aircraft. They are designed to hold the stopwatch in firmly while still allowing access to the various buttons. These clips also adjust up or down to accommodate various size watches. They have one long screw held together from behind with a wing-nut. I could not find a domestic source so I ordered them for the UK. I went this route for several reasons. First, I wanted to be able to easily remove the stopwatches and lock them in the glove box if security was a concern. Next, I wanted the holders to actually work and reckon aircraft specifications would do the trick. Finally, if I didn't like the look I could remove them leaving a clean radio-delete set-up. ![]() ![]() |

Project update
Update: I finally starting going the other way with the project and installed this trim piece yesterday. I used 3M foam mounting tape on the back of the trim piece. Even with the heater/air control console installed it felt like the stopwatches were not 100% secure. They are heavier than they look.
So I added more stability by installing two vertical strips of metal that rested behind the actual dash metal pulling everything snuggly. I was planning on cutting custom pieces but found the perfect size and shape with the brackets that hold the torsion bar covers (I had extra). Sorry for the lack of pics but it couldn't get a good shot. |

I just had the wife pick-up to mounting clips while she is in Germany. I won two stopwatches on ebay and plan to mount the watches in the same area...block off radio area:

Bavaria-- glad to hear you scored some watches and your wife picked up some clips. It's great how our loved ones help and tolerate our hobby
![]() I was able to climb under the dash to get a shot of the extra brackets I just installed. Not the best pics but gives you the idea. I'm pleased with the overall look and hope you are too on your car. ![]() ![]() |
