Is my SC a US or RoW model?

I don't know how to tell if my car is a US or RoW model.
The chassis # is 9118210949 and the engine # is 6281151.
What are some other clues?

Also what should the correct WUR # be on this car? The title says it's a '78 but the WUR I have is -089 and I've been told that is for a '81-'83 and the prescribed WUR for a '78 is supposed to be -045 or -069. Any thoughts?

one easy clue that I know about would be if there are side-marker blinker lights on the front fenders. If yes=ROW, if not=US. Post your pics, so we can take a look.

You have a 1978 911 SC US model Targa :)

twistoffat 03-29-2012 07:55 AM

The 2 after the 8 denotes a US SC ROW had a 3

If your VIN starts with WP0ZZZ, then it is a ROW.

Things get changed all the time on these cars. You can't rely on something like the WUR to be a guide.

I don't think the side-blinkers were added to the RoW cars until '81.

Side blinkers can be added to any car easily, the VIN is the best way to tell.

Thosec letters only came in to existance in the 80īs, for older cars it doesnīt unfortunately apply

WP0ZZZ (3rd alphanumeric digit is a zero "0" not an OH "O") = 17-digit VIN, which was implemented in 1981; does not apply to this '78.

WP0ZZZ VIN above the fuel tank in the frunk doesn't necessarily indicate a ROW vehicle. Only means chassis/unibody started out that way (I'm pretty sure all did). Addition of market-specific components => final 'real' VIN on A-pillar and center of dash.

THIS is the correct way to tell on SCs before the WPO serial numbers started.

Same car model.......

Brian,

Like what I mentioned to you earlier, the WUR (-089) in your car is not the correct unit prescribed by the manufacturer. However, it could be made to work like a -045. I also have a '78 SC Targa US model similar to yours that has a WUR-045.

The initial tests of your WUR showed very low cold control fuel pressure at 0.75 bar and the bi-metallic spring was not deflecting at all even after 5 mins. of test. The heater resistance was 30.6 Ohms and that's a good number. But the WUR was not functioning correctly.

I'll do another series of test to determine if I could make the -089 perform like a -045 and ship it back to you. If the internal parts are in good condition it would be doable. At this point, I would refrain offering you my extra WUR due to conflict of interest. I rather make your WUR work than make a few bucks. Spent plenty of man-hour just setting the equipment and doing the tests. I'll keep you posted.

Tony

Thanks Tony.
If you could make my -089 perform like a -045 I would be forever grateful. And I appreciate all the work you've done already. I would be happy to pay you for your good work.

You are correct ! 81 was the 1st year for lateral blinkers . This was done to meet the spec's for car exported to Norway & Sweden which required the laterals .

Yeah, mine is a '79 ROW and the side markers were added by the previous owner. Frustrating because I'm not a fan of them, the wiring is pretty hokey, and removing them would require a lot of paint work.

Actually, it isn't. It an O. This caused me untold grief trying to register/license my 968 in Nevada. The bar code reader at the inspection stations reads an O, which gave an "Invalid PIN" error message, manually entering a 0 gave a "No Title Match" match message. I ended up having to go to the head tech inspector for Clark County and he wrote an exception in the software code to allow me to register/renew online.

Although the 17 digit VIN was implemented in 1981, Porsche didn't get on the "2's not Z's, 0's not O's, etc" bandwagon until sometime after my '92 was made. FWIW, just like nearly all fonts, O's are round and 0's are oblong top to bottom. AFAIK, most 0's in VINs also have the characteristic line through them. (Euro-speak for "NO.")
