Ignition/starter woes

I started my car yesterday only to hear a weird whining noise coming from the rear. When I shut the car off, I quickly realised that my starter was continuing to engage. All I could think to do was pull the negative battery cable off. Now I'm stuck not knowing where to look. Should I check the ignition , solenoid, or starter? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your solenoid has gone bad and is hanging up.

I agree that it sounds like your solenoid is hanging up. But why? It shouldn't be getting any power unless the key is in the start position. So your switch may be bad. Connect the battery's ground and turn the switch to the on position. Check for voltage at the starter. If you're getting any the switch is bad or you have a crossed wire somewhere.

Good luck!

Right on BK, the yellow ignition wire may be energized all the time instead of being momentary for start only. If your car is CIS, see if you're getting 12v at the thermo time switch yellow wire all the time.
