Is there a way to measure RPM (other than your tach)?
I'm wondering if there is a way to measure my RPM other than the tach.
I'm asking because my tach reads about 500-600 rpm at idle and that seems fine, if not a little high. I can't imagine pushing it up to 850-900 as that would seem really high. So, I'm wondering how accurate my tach is - I'm not an electrical wizzard but I do own a multi-meter. Is there a way to test with that? |
Indeed. e.g. Timing Lights
What are your circumstances? |
Optical tach. Sold at Harbor Freight for about $40. Point it at the pulley and read the rpm.

tach/dwell meter

Hmmm, I have a timing light but it only flashes. I don't think it has any guage and I don't have a tach/dwell meter - but, I know someone who has one.
Thanks. |
Look around for a tach / dwell engine diagnostic .. they can be found on ebay for not to much ... also you could hook up another tach and check it vs yours .. easy if you have some one around with a Porsche and a compatible tach ... or if you could wire in an aftermarket tach in temporarily ...

my LM2 has a Tach feature
There are some DVM that registers tachs as well. |
My DVM purchased from AZ plugs into the coil and gives you a digital reading.

My meter gets it off of the coil, as well.
